Jacob and Wilhelm's first book of fairy tales, Children's and Household Tales, published in 1812, included 86 folktales and was an instant success. Shortly thereafter, the brothers incorporated 70 more stories in their next volume of Grimms' Fairy Tales. This continued for six more editions! "Hansel and Gretel" (also known as Hansel and Grettel, Hansel and Grethel, or Little Brother and Little Sister / German: Hänsel und Gretel) is a well-known fairy tale of German origin, recorded by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. Hansel and Gretel are a young brother and sister kidnapped by a cannibalistic witch living deep in the forest in a house constructed of cake and confectionery. The two children escape with their lives by outwitting her. Hansel and Gretel are the young children of a poor woodcutter.
