In this volume we examine the German language. Or rather the authors who wrote in German but are here translated into English. Jacob and Wilhelm's first book of fairy tales, Children's and Household Tales, published in 1812, included 86 folktales and was an instant success. Shortly thereafter, the brothers incorporated 70 more stories in their next volume of Grimms' Fairy Tales. This continued for six more editions! The complete collection contains over 200 stories, and is probably the best-known work of German literature.

"Rumpelstiltskin" is a fairytale popularly associated with Germany (where he is known as Rumpelstilzchen). The tale was one collected by the Brothers Grimm in the 1812 edition of Children's and Household Tales.

"Hansel and Gretel" (also known as Hansel and Grettel, Hansel and Grethel, or Little Brother and Little Sister / German: Hänsel und Gretel) is a well-known fairy tale of German origin, recorded by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. Hansel and Gretel are a young brother and sister kidnapped by a cannibalistic witch living deep in the forest in a house constructed of cake and confectionery. The two children escape with their lives by outwitting her. Hansel and Gretel are the young children of a poor woodcutter.

When a great famine settles over the land, the woodcutter's abusive second wife decides to take the children into the woods and abandon them there so that she and her husband will not starve to death, because the children eat too much.
