Von 1851 bis 1853 veröffentliche Charles Dickens in seiner Zeitschrift Household Words eine kleine vergnüglich-ironische Serie über ein fiktives Kleinstädtchen: Cranford. Verfasst wurde sie von der britischen Schriftstellerin Elizabeth Gaskell. Die Autorin erzählt in liebevollen Episoden vom Leben im victorianischen England, von altmodischen Gewohnheiten und von selbstbewussten Frauen, die die Geschicke ihres Städtchens lenken – darunter die vernünftige Deborah und ihre sanftmütige, dabei etwas furchtsame Schwester Miss Matty, oder von Miss Betsy, die wohl die einzige Kuh Englands besitzt, die Flanellanzüge trägt.

"Cranford" is the best-known novel of the 19th century English writer Elizabeth Gaskell. It was first published in 1851 as a serial in the magazine "Household Words", which was edited by Charles Dickens.

When her father leaves the church in a crisis of conscience, Margaret Hale is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire to move with her family to the north of England. Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton, Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice. This is intensified by her tempestuous relationship with the mill owner and self-made man John Thornton.

The novel provides insight and a bit of satire regarding the everyday humdrum in small towns. Cranford is separated into 16 chapters, opening with a snapshot of Captain Brown and his two daughters who live in the book's namesake town: Cranford. The gossipy women of the town are slow to accept Brown socially, but they eventually welcome him into their circles. Captain Brown is later injured, and the responsibility of the house falls on his younger daughter.
