This is a story from the Dubliners, Volume 1 collection. James Joyce's Dubliners is a collection of short stories about the lives of the people of Dublin around the turn of the century. Each story describes a small but significant moment of crisis or revelation in the life of a particular Dubliner, sympathetically but always with stark honesty. Wenigstens der Plan mit dem Bazarbesuch funktioniert und so tritt er tapfer alleine eine Zugreise an und betritt mutig den pulsierenden Mittelpunkt des öffentlichen Gesellschaftslebens.

Die Hauptfigur dieser Geschichte ist ein Dubliner Junge, dessen tristes Dasein im monotonen Alltag durch die lose Freundschaft mit einem Priester etwas aufgelockert wird. Durch diesen Gottesdiener bekommt er Bruchstücke religiös-kirchlicher Standard-Vorgänge vermittelt, mit denen er eigentlich weder etwas anzufangen noch nützlich einzuordnen weiß. Als dieser Priester stirbt, nimmt der als Ich-Erzähler auftretende Junge ebenfalls an dem Gedächtnistreffen für den Verstorbenen teil, bei dem die Begräbniskosten geklärt und Gedenkworte ausgetauscht werden.
