What Mr. London did so graphically for the poorest quarters of London a few years ago, he now does for the American underworld of the tramp and hobo, a territory in which his young wanderlust led him far afield.

The Scarlet Plague, by Jack London, was the first example of a post-apocalyptic fiction novel in modern literature. Set in a ravaged and wild America, the story takes place in 2073, 60 years after the spread of the Red Death, an uncontrollable epidemic that depopulated and nearly destroyed the world in 2013. One of the few survivors, James Howard Smith, alias “Granser”, tells his incredulous and near-savage grandsons how the pandemic spread in the world and about the reactions of the people to contagion and death.

A Daughter of the Snows is Jack London's first novel. Set in the Yukon, it tells the story of Frona Welse, "a Stanford graduate and physical Valkyrie" who takes to the trail after upsetting her wealthy father's community by her forthright manner and befriending the town's prostitute. She is also torn between love for two suitors: Gregory St Vincent, a local man who turns out to be cowardly and treacherous; and Vance Corliss, a Yale-trained mining engineer.

Jack London's 1903 novel The Call of the Wild is a brilliant tale of resilience and adaptability, but some of the language (which includes words such as brumal, ferine, obdurate, remonstrance, and pertinacity) puts a handbrake on the flow of the story. To counter that, Rob Redenbach edited London's original work and recorded an audiobook that lets you sit back and enjoy the story - without needing a dictionary on your lap.

The classic short story "To Build a Fire", by American author Jack London, is brought to life in ways he probably never imagined when it was first published in 1908. I don't know if Jack London intended for this to be a didactic tale, but it certainly is. When the Yukon experts say don't go out when it's 50 degrees below zero it's best to pay attention. The man, he is never given a name, Sally's forth when it is actually 75 degrees below zero. London takes us into the mind of the man and the dog as the man heads to his doom. Read by award-winning audiobook narrator and producer Mike Vendetti, make sure you are in a warm room when you listen to this tale of the North because at 75 degrees below zero, it is cold.
