First published in the English literary anthology annual The Keepsake in 1833 by Mary Shelly, master of Gothic fiction, The Invisible Girl is a story about the turbulence of secret love. Like much of her work, Shelly blends the dark and the supernatural with elements of romance and intimacy and unravels this story within a story with aplomb, and the setting of rural Wales in the early 19th century lends to the foreboding and bittersweet tone of the tale.

Pubblicato nel 1843 "Il cuore rivelatore" è forse uno dei racconti più famosi di E. A. Poe, considerato l'inventore del genere letterario del terrore e del mistero. Nella sua mania ossessiva per i dettagli, la voce narrante conduce l'ascoltatore nella ricostruzione di un delitto, senza mai sottolineare una sua presunta innocenza, quanto invece la sua perfetta salute mentale, nel tentativo disperato di negare la sua pazzia. Con estrema razionalità Poe scandaglia i luoghi più reconditi dell'animo umano alla ricerca dell'ombra, del mistero e del paradossale.
