Ireland Memoir

In early 2018, Erin Darcy created an online art project, "In Her Shoes – Women of the Eighth", to safely and anonymously share private stories of the real and devastating impact of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution of Ireland. In the five months leading up to the referendum on abortion, the project asked a simple question of undecided voters: put yourself in her shoes. Within weeks, Erin was receiving hundreds of stories from a broad spectrum of experiences of planned and unplanned terminations.

Arnold Meagher was born in a small village in the heart of Ireland, Ballinamuck in the County of Longford. When he was four, he moved with his family to the larger village of Drumlish, four-and-a-half miles away. It is in the larger village that his stories of growing up in Ireland's heartland begin: among villagers who loved to chat, among dew-covered pastures on his grandmother's farm and among the fairy forts and whispering bogs that dot the countryside.

Beattie, was the resident manager of Laharna Hotel, Larne, from 1935, and in the Second World War, as part of essential services, looked after troop-feeding at Larne Harbour and later the American Officers' Club in the former Midland Hotel, Belfast.

The times were financially tough and morally prude, with dissenters both north and south of the border few and far between. Intellectualism was suspect, and liberalism was often equated with communism. A wealth of varying and informative material and the ability to anchor the personal securely within the public domain gives this memoir a universal appeal.

London is one of my most favorite cities, not only in Europe, but also in the entire world. And I love England and the rest of the U.K. as well. And while London is always exciting for me to visit, it is the whole of the United Kingdom that remains particularly etched in my memories.
