President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty did more than offer aid to needy Americans; in some cities, it also sparked both racial conflict and cooperation. Race and the War on Poverty examines the African American and Mexican American community organizations in Los Angeles that emerged to implement War on Poverty programs. It explores how organizers applied democratic vision and political savvy to community action, and how the ongoing African American, Chicano, and feminist movements in turn shaped the contours of the War on Poverty’s goals, programs, and cultural identity.

From Understanding Poverty to Developing Human Capacity details how schools, churches, courts, businesses, and communities can build resources for people in poverty. With nine articles written by Dr. Payne, along with two co-written with her colleague, Philip DeVol, these writings cover the gamut of Dr. Payne's efforts in dealing with poverty-related issues.

Writer and journo-tech pioneer Christine Marie Nielsen didn't think she'd be returning to her native city of Milwaukee (oft called the most segregated city in the US in terms of socio-economic and racial lines), but because of family income constraints and a resulting need to help her parents, she does. While there, she looks into systemic problems and what makes the city tick, but she also finds herself being pulled back into a cycle of poverty.

In this book I try to highlight financial and other areas we may not consider as young or working class people, to help improve ourselves and future generations. A simple and positive reminder to keep trying to achieve our goals. Written in an understandable format and not academic level so people can grasp concepts easily.
