Turkish War

The experience that everyone associates with World War I is not commonly that of the Ottoman Empire. But in the Middle Eastern Front, the British and their allies fought the Ottoman Turkish Empire under harsh desert conditions hundreds of miles from home, struggling for possession of places most people only knew from the Bible and the Koran. The fall of the Ottoman Empire would set the geopolitical scene of the new Middle East.

This small volume has no pretensions to be a history of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-8. It deals merely with the strategy and major tactics of the decisive portion of the campaign in Europe.

The images that are evoked when one speaks of the Ottomans in the West is, without fail, Muslims in prayer, harems of exotic women, eunuch guards, lavish palaces, and colorful fashions. All these things, without doubt, were indeed part and parcel of the Ottoman society and their royal court. Here we will dive into their world, their history, and their society. The rise and fall of the Ottoman juggernaut informs and influences the Middle East to this day.

In terms of geopolitics, perhaps the most seminal event of the Middle Ages was the successful Ottoman siege of Constantinople in 1453. The city had been an imperial capital as far back as the fourth century, when Constantine the Great shifted the power center of the Roman Empire there, effectively establishing two almost equally powerful halves of antiquity’s greatest empire. Constantinople would continue to serve as the capital of the Byzantine Empire even after the Western half of the Roman Empire collapsed in the late fifth century.

Yeterli insan gücünün olmaması, Hitler’i ülkede bulunan her erkekten yararlanmaya zorluyordu. Firariler, suçlular ve politik mahkumlar da aftan yararlanarak orduya kaydoluyordu. Kendilerini ceza taburlarında bulan bu askerler, en tehlikeli görevlere atanıyorlardı. İşin en zor kısmı koşulsuz itaat sağlamaktı. Gerek küfürlerle gerekse Almanca talimatlarla, bir ceza taburuna ait olduklarını ve bu yüzden dünyanın en iyi askerleri olmaları gerektiğini günde en az yirmi kere duyuyorlardı. 27. Panzer Alayı, askerlerin hiçbirinin inanmadığı bir savaşta mücadele etmek zorundaydı.

27. Panzer Alayının askerleri geri çekiliyordu. Alman şehirlerinin üzerine müttefiklerin bombaları yağarken, askerler de bu korkunç vurgunda rol alıyordu. Tanklar, dayanılmaz kış koşullarında adeta bitmeyecekmiş gibi görünen bir ölüm yürüyüşüyle Rus bozkırlarında güçlükle ilerliyordu. Binlerce mülteci yollara dökülmüştü. Rus savaş uçakları, tıpkı diğer katiller gibi alçaktan uçarak aşağıdaki mülteci sürüsünü gökyüzüne doğru yükselen tek bir kederli çığlığa dönüştürüyordu. Sven Hassel, gönüllü olarak Alman silahlı kuvvetlerindeki bir ceza taburunda görev yapmıştır.
