Summary
Two rooftops in suburban Ohio. A 75-year-old man and a nine-year-old girl sit on houses full of secrets. Literally. Bernard wants nothing more than to enjoy his beer (and perhaps kill a few sparrows), but Rory next door has different plans for him.
With six decades between them and only four chance encounters to connect, these unlikely new friends unearth what's buried in each other and find new ground.

About Matilda Lawler (Rory): Matilda Lawler is currently a series regular on Station Eleven, a limited series for HBO Max based on the novel by Emily St. John Mandel. She portrays young Kirsten, the story’s protagonist. Matilda played the titular role in the Disney+'s original movie Flora and Ulysses directed by Lena Kahn. Matilda played Michaela McManus' daughter in The Block Island Sound by the McManus Brothers for Netflix. On stage, Matilda originated the role of Honor Carney on Broadway in The Ferryman, written by Jez Butterworth and directed by Sam Mendes, which won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Play. Matilda made her professional stage debut in The Net Will Appear starring opposite Richard Masur.
About Richard Masur (Bernard): Richard Masur is an American character actor who has appeared in more than 80 films. From 1995 to 1999, he served two terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Masur currently sits on the corporate board of the Motion Picture & Television Fund. He is best known for Nick Lobo on Rhoda (1974-1977), Stanley Uris in the TV miniseries It (1990), and Edward L. L. Moore on Younger (2016-2018).

Hilarious, Quirky good times again from Erin!
This is another amazing play audiobook done by Erin Mallon. Her creativity abounds again in her latest play of two unlikely characters who become strong allies and friends with one another. This is likely my favourite so far because it really showcases Erin vive and willingness to see life for all it’s worth and expressing life in all it’s quirkiness and realism that I have come to expect in Erin’s plays.
Rory is a precocious little girl, and is beautifully played by Matilda Lawler. I think that in real life Matilda is like Rory in saying what ever is on her mind.
Bernard’s gruff older grumpiness is prefect as well. And he is kinda like a grandfather character here.
This book had me in tears of laughter and giggles as Rory tries to find the appropriate words she is trying to express, and ‘Nard’s assistance in educating her left me with a smile on most of the day. Then that ending almost pulled my heart out in tears of sadness but also leapfrogged me with hope for the future for this unlikely duo and their friendship in the future.
Amazing book/play and fantastic audiobook with spectacular characters played by ultimate professionals.
Bravo to Erin Mallon and to Matilda Lawler and Richard Mazur.

Witty, unique and with lots of genuine emotions
One more unforgettable play by this author. This unexpected friendship between an old man and a little girl will bring you to tears between two bouts of laughter.
The life dramas they talk about are of the tragic kind, but their interactions are full of humor and energy–thanks to Rory who’s sharp but too new to life to understand what’s happening around her, while poor Bernard, who’s been kind of removed from life for too long, learns again how to let someone in. It was fascinating to see their relationship change and move forward in just 4 incredible encounters.
Characters, situations and dialogues were up to par for the author. Witty, unique and with lots of genuine emotions. The bubbly energy of the young child and the gruff demeanor of the old man were interpreted amazingly by two talented actors. Their performance was so good that you could practically see them, just by listening to them.

Brilliant
Once again, Erin Mallon showcases her amazing talent for writing engaging plays that not only make you laugh but tug at your heartstrings as well. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. The way Erin layers in series subject with humour is nothing short of brilliant. Take this audio play for example. You have an older gentleman that just wants some peace, he’s dealing with some difficult issues that we come to find out more about through the course of the play, and he’s pretty much harassed by his hyperactive nine-year-old neighbour, who is a sweet girl with no boundaries that clearly just wants someone to talk to. They are an unlikely match but watching their friendship grow was beautiful. There were so many laugh out loud moments, but then, you’d be hit in the gut by a revelation that leaves your heart hurting. Add in that the entire play is set on their rooftops, and it is the perfect story in these social distancing times. It perfectly showcases how connections can be made and the affect they can have on a person.
Matilda Lawler and Richard Masur were perfectly cast for the play and reviving their roles for the audio play was not only a good decision but the only one. I can’t imagine anyone else giving these characters life the way that these two did. The embodied these characters. The production was wonderful with sound effects that enhance the story.
