History, mystery, translation — I write all of these and feel they have a lot in common. For the histories, “What seemed like mystery is only untold history,” as Jimmy Cliff once sang. My latest one is a new, updated version of THE HISTORY OF HAVANA, from OR Books, with an epilogue covering the many changes over the most recent decade of that city, now nearly five centuries old. As for literary translation, someone, somewhere called it the act of saying “I have a met a beautiful stranger whom I want to introduce to you." My translations from Spanish try to bring that mysterious stranger into your hands, your home. Due out in July is Gabriela Alemán's POSO WELLS, from Ecuador via City Lights. It’s a kind of detective novel, and many other things too, and apt for the political moment we’re in. In my own mysteries, my amateur detective character, foreign-car mechanic Alex Glauberman, is always “translating” what people say to him – turning lies, half-truths, and partial perceptions into a stereoscopic vision of what really went down and why. Now reissued as ebooks by Booksbnimble.com. Meanwhile, I’m working on something new that’s got some of all three — intrigue, lies and half-truths, lots of history, and trying to connect across boundaries too.
