Dr. Taha Jabir Al-Alwani (1935– 2016) was a graduate of Al-Azhar University and an internationally renowned scholar and expert in the fields of Islamic legal theory, jurisprudence (fiqh), and usul al-fiqh. He was born in Iraq 1354/1935. He received his primary and secondary education in his native and then graduated with an Honors Degree from the College of Shari’ah and Law at Al-Azhar University in Cairo in 1378/1959. From the same university, he was awarded his Master’s Degree in 1388/1968 and a doctorate in usul al-fiqh in 1392/1973. He was a former President of The Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences (GSISS), USA; as well as of The Fiqh Council of North America; Member of the OIC Islamic Fiqh Academy; and former President of The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), USA. He authored numerous works including: “Source Methodology in Islamic Jurisprudence”, “Towards a Fiqh for Minorities”; “The Ethics of Disagreement in Islam”; “Ijtihad”; and “The Qur’an and the Sunnah: The Time-Space Factor”.
