My story is very familiar to anyone on the search for serenity after a period of addiction. In my case, the addiction to alcohol lasted over 30 years, and as is very common with this affliction, I created a trail of havoc and misery in my wake. I came to write Stoicism, The 12 Steps, and Free Range Spirituality in an attempt to help anyone looking for a way out of addiction. During my sobriety, I found Stoicism and was struck by the similarities between that philosophy and the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Another motivation for writing the book came from the common problem many desperate people have with the word God or a Higher Power when introduced to Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs. The idea of Free Range Spirituality is my way of interpreting the concept of finding a God or Higher Power of your own understanding. I wrote this book late in life at the age of 72 after a 30-plus-year self-imposed hell of alcoholism in an attempt to help anyone looking for a way out of the misery of addiction. I currently live in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the banks of the New River in Grassy Creek, North Carolina. I am here and alive by the grace of my friends and family, who held me up when I could not stand by myself, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
