Greg Jenner (FRHistS) is a British public historian, broadcaster, and author of funny history books for adults and children, as well as being the creator and host of the chart-topping BBC YOU'RE DEAD TO ME podcast. He previously worked for 11 years on the multi-award-winning BBC comedy TV show 'HORRIBLE HISTORIES'. Born in 1982, he was educated at the University of York. Greg's first three books were for teens and adults, and were published by W&N. They have been translated into several foreign languages: They were - ASK A HISTORIAN: 50 SURPRISING ANSWERS TO THINGS YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW (2021) - DEAD FAMOUS: AN UNEXPECTED HISTORY OF CELEBRITY, FROM BRONZE AGE TO SILVER SCREEN (2020) - A MILLION YEARS IN A DAY: A CURIOUS HISTORY OF DAILY LIFE, FROM STONE AGE TO PHONE AGE (2015) Since then, Greg has switched to writing for children. His debut kids' book YOU ARE HISTORY (2022), is a funny and colourful bestselling history of the world through 50 everyday objects a child will know. It is published by Walker Books, with illustrations by Jenny Taylor In 2024, Greg launched his new children's non-fiction series TOTALLY CHAOTIC HISTORY. Each book is illustrated by Rikin Parekh and is co-written with an expert historian. Book 1 is called ANCIENT EGYPT GETS UNRULY, co-written with Dr Campbell Price. Book 2 is ROMAN BRITAIN with Dr Emma Southon, and Book 3 will be THE STONE AGE with Dr Brenna Hassett. As a broadcaster, Greg hosts the chart-topping BBC comedy podcast YOU'RE DEAD TO ME. The show pairs up top comedians with top historians to explore global history, embracing a bold blend of chaotic humour and thoughtful nuance. The show launched at the UK Number 1 in its debut week, has become an international hit, and is nearing 100 million downloads and plays. Greg also previously presented two series of BBC Radio 4's PAST FORWARD: A CENTURY OF SOUND, two series of HOMESCHOOL HISTORY for children, co-hosted INSIDE VERSAILLES on BBC television, and has made numerous other appearances on British radio, TV, podcasts, and in newspapers. From 2008-2019, Greg was the the Historical Consultant, and one of the writers, on nine series of the the BBC’s Emmy and multi-BAFTA award-winning comedy sketch-show HORRIBLE HISTORIES, being solely responsible for the factual accuracy of over 2,000 sketches and 150 comedy songs. He also worked on the BAFTA-nominated film HORRIBLE HISTORIES: THE MOVIE - ROTTEN ROMANS (2019). In 2021, he also advised on the YouTube Kids animated comedy adaptation of the successful CORPSE TALK comic book series. Greg is both a passionate defender and careful critic of the way in which the past is exploited for entertainment. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, plus an Honorary Research Associate at Royal Holloway, University of London where he teaches on the Public History MA course. He also teaches occasionally at his alma mater, the University of York, where he studied for 4 years before abandoning plans for a PhD to instead go into the TV industry.
