Hi there. I'm a microbial ecologist currently residing in the UK. My academic passions lie in researching how we can design and restore ecosystems to promote health. By health, I mean the health of humans – and the rest of nature – by reconnecting with our Invisible Friends. These are microorganisms (microbes) that float in the air and cling to trees and soil. For thousands of years, we've co-evolved with microbes, shaping our immune systems, guts and brain structures. My mission is to counter the prevailing negative view of the unseen world, as, despite a few microbes causing nasty maladies like COVID-19 (the bane of society), most are in fact our friends! The plants and animals around us wouldn't survive without them. The flavours and smells of our foods are shaped by them; they gobble up pollution, allow trees to communicate, and may even be involved in our decision-making. Microbiome research is changing our understanding of the world and challenging our concepts of free will and individuality! I hope you enjoy reading my first book, Invisible Friends. I am also passionate about nature conservation, creative activities and climbing things – cliffs, trees, you name it. For more on the book and my ecological research please go to www.jakemrobinson.com and follow me on Twitter at @_jake_robinson and @MicrobeBook Thanks for reading! - Jake
