What are the secrets of media training? How do you prep a CEO, a celebrity or author for a tough interview? For almost 40 years former award-winning network journalist Jim Cameron has been a media consultant to hundreds of corporate and public relations clients, preparing their clients for media interviews for print and broadcast. THE POWER OF STORIES Cameron reveals the tricks of his trade in "OFF THE RECORD: Confessions of a Media Consultant”. “I always teach my training clients to deliver their messages through stories. Anecdotes connect with the audience and help sell the veracity of your message,” says Cameron. In OFF THE RECORD Jim shares true stories of behind-the-scenes strategizing, preparing clients for “the worst interviews of their lives”. Cameron promises that all of the stories in his book are true, but “the names have been changed to protect the guilty.” “Like the time I was training a cattle farmer, only to discover we were being spied on by animal rights activists. Or the media tricks I learned from a Connecticut governor dealing with impatient TV reporters. I even confess the biggest mistake I ever made giving an interview, getting caught ON the record saying words I still regret.” From touring a nuclear power plant to working alongside “the Edward R Murrow of my generation” to narrating an audio-book Donald Trump, Cameron’s book is full of advice and lessons learned from almost four decades on the job. JOURNALIST AND MEDIA CONSULTANT Jim Cameron has worked almost 40 years as a Media Trainer and Speaking Coach under the auspices of his consultancy, Cameron Communications Inc. Cameron has spent over 40 years in journalism for broadcast and print. While at NBC News, he received a George Foster Peabody Award. In conjunction with INC. Magazine, he also wrote and hosted the syndicated radio series, Minding Your Business. For 12 years Jim ran JFORUM, the pioneering online service for journalists and communications professionals worldwide, on CompuServe. In 1982 Cameron transferred that journalism experience into a new career: training people to deliver their messages effectively to the media and the public. His media-training clients have included hundreds of CEOs, scientists and authors. He has trained every kind of spokesperson imaginable—from athletes to marketing experts, from celebrities to farmers. Cameron’s trainees have appeared on 60 Minutes, 20/20, The Today Show, CNN, CNBC and hundreds of radio stations. They’ve been quoted in the pages of The Wall Street Journal, trade journals and lifestyle magazines. His clients have testified before Congress, made presentations to financial analysts and given speeches at major symposia. Jim has dealt with environmental crises, food tampering scares, insurance reform, employee healthcare, and workplace safety issues. A native of Toronto, Canada, Cameron resides in Darien, Connecticut, where he serves as Program Director of Darien TV79, his town’s government access cable TV channel.
