I teach courses in sports reporting and feature writing in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas in the great city of Austin. I previously spent 22 years in daily newspapers and had a short stint at the Scripps Howard News Service in Washington D.C., where I wrote about the U.S. House of Representatives, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Aberdeen Proving Ground and a handful of Rose Garden ceremonies during the Clinton Administration. I live near Austin with my wife and two children, but I come from Kansas City. I graduated from the University of Central Missouri (née Central Missouri State University) in 1988 with bachelor's degrees in journalism and psychology, and got my master's in 1995 from the Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University. The Last Stand of Payne Stewart is my second non-fiction book about golf. Before that, I wrote a whole lot of newspaper copy in a whole lot of places. I covered schools at the Olathe (Kansas) Daily News, enjoyed three seminal summers with The Hawk Eye (Iowa's oldest newspaper, in gritty Burlington) and, after graduate school, spent four memorable years at The Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis, which sent me all over Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi to report on Delta dwellers, country-western singers, Appalachian Trail hikers, serial killers, treasure seekers, sassafras peddlers, truck farmers, the 1998 Jonesboro Middle School massacre and, one time, Brett Favre. I wrote for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1999 and 2000, a period that included polar reporting trips to the tragedy at Columbine High School in the spring and Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta the following winter. I spent the last dozen years of my newspaper career roaming Texas and beyond for the Austin American-Statesman, which is how I met the Penick family and Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. I became a sports writer in 2002. I had found my calling. I twice won the Texas Daily Newspaper Association Fred Hartman Excellence in Sports Writing Award and twice won first place in the Associated Press Sports Editors national writing competition. I have been a finalist for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists and the National Headliner Awards. My work has been cited in the Notables section in two editions of the Best American Sports Writing anthology (2007, 2008). I've also written for The New York Times, Texas Monthly, espnW, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative magazine, the United States Golf Association, Sports on Earth, Kansas City Magazine, the Kansas City View, the Kansas City Pitch, Austin Golf magazine, Travel + Leisure Golf and Golf Journal. I probably think I'm a better golfer than I really am, which is true of most dreamers who play the wicked and exquisite game. Incidentally and quite curiously, I qualified at, of all places, Austin Country Club for the 2012 Texas Mid-Amateur Championship. I finished in last place that September at Dallas Athletic Club. But I made the field. Harvey Penick was Ben Crenshaw's 15th club at the 1995 Masters, and on that August afternoon at the qualifier in 2012, he was mine.
