Matthew D. Lassiter is Professor of History and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor at the University of Michigan and co-director of the U-M Carceral State Project (https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/dcc-project/). He is author of "The Suburban Crisis: White America and the War on Drugs"; "The Silent Majority: Suburban Politics in the Sunbelt South," and coeditor of "The Myth of Southern Exceptionalism." He is also the director of the Policing and Social Justice HistoryLab and coauthor of more than a dozen of its multimedia publications, including the book-length website exhibit "Detroit Under Fire: Police Violence, Crime Politics, and the Struggle for Racial Justice in the Civil Rights Era" (https://policing.umhistorylabs.lsa.umich.edu/s/detroitunderfire/page/home).
