Molly Bishop Shadel is a professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, where she teaches oral advocacy, negotiations and public speaking. She is the author of two books: Finding Your Voice in Law School: Mastering Classroom Cold Calls, Job Interviews, and Other Verbal Challenges (Carolina Academic Press, 2013) and Tongue-Tied America: Reviving the Art of Verbal Persuasion (with Robert N. Sayler, Wolters Kluwer Law & Businesss, 2011, 2d ed. 2014, 3d ed. 2019, www.tonguetiedamerica.com). Shadel is an instructor in the Great Courses “Law School for Everyone” series published in 2017, and “How to Speak Effectively in Any Situation,” to be released in 2021. She studied English and Theater at Harvard University and directed plays professionally before entering law school. She earned her law degree at Columbia University, where she was a Notes Editor for the Columbia Law Review. She clerked for the Honorable Eugene Nickerson, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of New York, and practiced law at Covington & Burling and the United States Department of Justice before joining the faculty at the University of Virginia.
