Ismael Tabalno, affectionately known as Pineapple Sam, grew up amidst the lush, vibrant landscapes of Kauai, Hawaii. As the youngest of eight children in a family that emigrated from the Philippines, Sam's early memories are steeped in the sights and sounds of a sugar cane plantation, which he fondly describes as a “Paradise or a Garden of Earthly Delight.” Known to his friends as S'mael, Sam's passion for storytelling—what locals call "talking story"—is a hallmark of his writing, allowing him to share his adventures with family, friends, and readers alike. His debut collection, "The Life and Adventures of Pineapple Sam Vol. 1," features ten captivating short stories that chronicle his youthful escapades and mischief on the island. As Sam transitions from childhood to adolescence, he grapples with a longing to explore the world beyond Kauai's shores. Amidst the backdrop of the tumultuous 1960s—a time marked by the San Francisco hippie movement, protests against the Vietnam War, and a burgeoning counterculture—Sam feels the pull of adventure. Inspired by the vibrant energy of the era, he seeks something more challenging than the carefree lifestyle of Kauai. In a bold move, Sam joins the United States Marine Corps, trading the tranquil island life for the harsh realities of military service. Sam's military experiences add depth to his narrative, leading him to write three additional short stories: "Hawaiian Pineapple Jarhead," "Killing Peace," and "Killing Peace II." These works delve into the complexities of his time in the Marines, exploring themes of resilience, bravery, and the search for peace amidst chaos.
