Not to be confused with the former NFL linebacker, William "Bill" Romanowski is a nationally recognized scholar and award-winning commentator on the intersection of religion and popular culture. He earned his PhD in American Culture Studies from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and is currently Professor, Emeritus, Communication at Calvin University where for many years he taught courses in film and media studies and authored various publications investigating the relation of American Christianity, popular art and culture. Critics commended his book, Pop Culture Wars: Religion and the Role of Entertainment in American Life (1998) as "remarkably balanced" and "a stunning portrait of the interplay of religion and popular culture." Supported by a grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities, Reforming Hollywood: How American Protestants Fought for Freedom at the Movies, won the 2013 Religious Communication Book of the Year Award and the Indiana Wesleyan University Honors College President’s Author Series Book of the Year Award. Published by Oxford University Press, this reassessment of Protestant-Hollywood relations has been called “authoritative,” “pathbreaking,” “remarkably fresh, significant, and fascinating,” and received a positive review in the highly respected (London) Times Literary Supplement. In print for twenty years now, with a revised and expanded second edition, a general audience book, Eyes Wide Open: Looking for God in Popular Culture, won an ECPA (Evangelical Christian Publishers Association) Gold Medallion Award, and has a Korean and English-language edition (Philippines). A three-part DVD series based on that book received an Aegis Award (previous winners include NBC News, Warner Bros. Pay-TV, ESPN2 and the Discovery Channel) and a Communicator Award of Distinction. One critic wrote that his most recent book, Cinematic Faith: A Christian Perspective on Movies and Meaning (2019), is yet another course in a "feast for those wanting to develop a coherent understanding and reflective approach to the study of faith and pop culture." Another reviewer thought that by reading this book "your viewing pleasure will be increased, your aesthetic appreciation will be broadened, and your understanding of filmmaking's influence on culture and the interwoven meaning of faith and life will be deepened."
