Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
You can see them, but you don't know them.
Ultras are football fans like no others. A hugely visible and controversial part of the global game, their credo and aesthetic replicated in almost every league everywhere on earth, a global movement of extreme fandom and politics is also one of the largest youth movements in the world. Yet they remain unknown: an anti-establishment force that is transforming both football and politics. In this book, James Montague goes underground to uncover the true face of this dissident force for the first time.
1312: Among the Ultras tells the story of how the movement began and how it grew to become the global phenomenon that now dominates the stadiums from the Balkans and Buenos Aires. With unprecedented insider access, the book investigates how ultras have grown into a fiercely political movement, embracing extremes on both the left and right; fighting against the commercialisation of football and society – and against the attempts to control them by the authorities, who both covet and fear their power.

An interesting visit around global ultras culture
I was interested in global football fan culture and where football support cross over into identity, patriotism, class and political movements.
the author takes an interesting global perspective on how communities define themselves through football. It provides as much of a travelogue as it is about football, and it is interesting to understand different snapshots of football clubs and their supporters.
the narration can be a bit dry and hard to follow on occasions and there is perhaps too much focus on personal relationships with people the author met, but it is a worthy listen if you're interested in the subject matter

Excelled book
Doesn’t glamorise the Ultra scene as many books on the subject do, simply tells their story in a very enjoyable way. Brilliant listen!

Brilliant Listen
Like his previous books, this was thoroughly well researched and written by Montague. Clearly, he goes above and beyond in putting himself in (potentially) harms way to get a real insight into football ultra culture.
Well worth a purchase!

History of 20th century
More of an insight into world politics than insight into football fans, it is a lovefest for those who brand themselves ultras and makes them out to be loveable rogues. Misses out through bias towards explaining actions due to politics rather than reality

Just didn’t like it
I was really looking forward to listening to this, as I’m a big football fan and have always found ultra culture fascinating. However; I had to stop listening to this a couple of hours in as it was just…really boring. It felt like a slow procession from one similar character to the next with nothing actually happening and with nothing if interest being transmitted. Maybe it gets much better after the chapter on Italy, but I’m not prepared to find out as there are so many other great listens out there. Really disappointed as I felt like this book would be right up my street…but it wasn’t even close.
