Summary

A classic Marple mystery, read by Emilia Fox.

For an instant the two trains ran together, side by side. In that frozen moment, Elspeth witnessed a murder. Helplessly, she stared out of her carriage window as a man remorselessly tightened his grip around a woman's throat. The body crumpled. Then the other train drew away. But who, apart from Miss Marple, would take her story seriously? After all, there were no suspects, no other witnesses… and no corpse.

One of my favourite Agatha books

I fair enjoyed it. A myriad of characters, a country house, a curry plus lots of red herrings to go through. Well read ..

Good listen

Excellent story of course. I've seen the TV adaptations many times but had never read the book so was pleased to come across this. Emilia did a good narration here in my opinion. Some of her voices in other audios are rather hammy but didn't find that in this one.

One of my favourite Miss Marples

What made the experience of listening to 4.50 from Paddington the most enjoyable?

I have only ever watched the tv versions of this story and to finally get round to reading...well, listening to the original was great fun. I loved seeing where some thing were more padded out and were some bits were completely different.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 4.50 from Paddington?

The murder! We actually got to see the murder of the woman instead of just a body showing up and working backwords. We knew there would be a body to find, it was just a case of waiting.

Have you listened to any of Emilia Fox’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to Emilia Fox before and I always enjoy her performances. Can't really compare.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I didn't laugh or cry, I just went though it with a little bit of excitment as I waited for something to happen. Also a few eyes rolls at the dialogue in some places.

clever, well read

I very much enjoyed the usual Miss Marple shenanigans, such a cheeky 'old' lady!
I also very much dispute a reviewer here who said Emilia Fox is a dreadful narrator - she is brilliant! Very evocative with the females voices, as adequate as possibly can be with the males. we'll done all round 👏👏👏

Emilia Fox delivers an outstanding performance.

If you could sum up 4.50 from Paddington in three words, what would they be?

Beautifully articulated by Emilia Fox, full of tension and intrigue, the reader takes us with her on an amazing journey.

What did you like best about this story?

Emilias varied voices for each and every character.

What does Emilia Fox bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

A perfect delivery of the narrative.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me smile on many occasions, Emilia manages to go from sweet delicate voices of older ladies so cherished by Agatha Christie to grouchy old men and all voices in-between! I do not know how she does it so perfectly.

Any additional comments?

I am looking for more audible performances by Emilia Fox, she is simply an outstanding narrator.

Couldn't Finish

I found the plot of this particular novel very slow and underwhelming. I still love the character though. A swift move on till the next Miss Marple.
Looking at the publication dates, it was 7 years or so between Miss Marple stories. I wonder if AC felt the same way about her own character in this novel as I do...

Very good Marple!

Gotta love a Miss Marple mystery. This one kept me guessing right until the last few chapters! Something about a murder mystery on an old train that's just so cosy!

Excruciating narration

One of the best Marple’s, with Christie at her best. I love the clever, witty observations of character in the Marple stories, and this one is a real treat with a host of different personalities. But oh boy, Emilia Fox is awful at accents, which is so off-putting. Why are the Joan Hickson narrations missing/disappearing from Audible?

Agatha Christie great storyteller

Love this story , Emilia Fox ok but much prefer Joan Hickson, she was and still is the best Miss Marple. Always will be.
