About this listen

*** There were 54 victims before this. Who is number 55? ***
A thriller with a killer hook, and an ending that will make you gasp!

Wilbrook in Western Australia is a sleepy, remote town that sits on the edge of miles and miles of unexplored wilderness. It is home to Police Sergeant Chandler Jenkins, who is proud to run the town’s small police station, a place used to dealing with domestic disputes and noise complaints.

All that changes on a scorching day when an injured man stumbles into Chandler’s station. He’s covered in dried blood. His name is Gabriel. He tells Chandler what he remembers.

He was drugged and driven to a cabin in the mountains and tied up in iron chains. The man who took him was called Heath. Heath told Gabriel he was going to be number 55. His 55th victim.

Heath is a serial killer.

As a manhunt is launched, a man who says he is Heath walks into the same station. He tells Chandler he was taken by a man named Gabriel. Gabriel told Heath he was going to be victim 55.

Gabriel is the serial killer.

Two suspects. Two identical stories. Which one is the truth?

James Delargy has written one of the most exciting debuts of 2019. He masterfully paints the picture of a remote Western Australian town and its people, swallowed whole by the hunt for a serial killer. This novel has been sold in 19 countries so far and has just been optioned for film.©2019 James Delargy (P)2019 Simon & Schuster UK

Not Good Narration

The story was ok. I could see it being made into a film but the narrator was pretty poor, very flat, which made it very, very long and meant I didn’t much care about any of the characters. Could have been a lot better.

Very gripping story!

I have enjoyed listening to this audiobook thoroughly. I was completely hooked on it from the first chapter. If you like murder mysteries with a twist, then this is for you. A real page turner. It was like no other book I’ve read! Five stars. I applaud you James Delargy

One very clever story

This is one of those books that I simply had to read after reading all the rave reviews. There were 54 victims but who is the 55th! is what this book is all about. I was hooked from the start ,Set in Wilbrook in Western Australia when we follow the story of Gabriel who turns up at Chandler's station covered in dried blood. and tells his story. and what a story it is! Then a man called Heath walks into the same station claiming he was kidnapped by a man called Gabriel......Two suspects. Two identical stories. Which one is the truth?

55 is one very clever story that will have you hooked and guessing until the end. It is jam packed with suspense and mystery has well has some nail biting descriptions.

Brilliant

Brilliant narrator, voices different characters convincingly. Engaging story, would make a good film. Look forward to the next book

Expectations dashed by the unexplicable ending.

This started so well, but gradually degenerated until the complete shambles of an ending.
What could have been a great book spoiled by the second half, and that terrible abrupt ending! Had to listen to the last few minutes three times to make sure I hadn't missed something important. Not clever, sorry.
I was hoping all might be explained in the next book, but it seems to be a completely separate story, so not wanting to be disappointed again, think I'll give it a miss, unless I read a review telling me the ending of this first book is explained.
I've read a few books now which begin really well and then are completely ruined as the second half worsens, shame when a little thought by the author would mean a better book!

Intriguing idea, ruined by annoying characters and annoying acoustics.

The premise for the story is good, but the delivery is seriously flawed. All the characters are unlikeable, unlikely, inept and miserable. All of them!
Add to that the genius who decided that it was a good idea, presumably to give atmosphere when the story was in flashback, to add reverb to the recording, resulting is a strange swishing effect. Horrible.
To top it all off is the ending... Grr

Not much

I didn’t enjoy this very much. I found the reading flat and I did not like the audio effects. The plot was contrived and not believable. Lastly had I know about all the religious elements of the story I would not have bought it in the first place.

poor quality sound

I really enjoy Australian novels but this one sounds like it was recorded in a tank causing an echoing effect. disappointing as books aren't cheap.
