About this listen
"With impeccable inflections and tones, El-Attar's narration embodies the quirky investigator and those who surround her. She personifies both the place and the people, making them come alive. Listeners will imagine they're traversing Cairo through the deep, dark night. This is a perfect listen for those who are short on time but want a thrilling audiobook." (AudioFile Magazine)
Egypt, 1912. In an alternate Cairo infused with the otherworldly, the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, and Supernatural Entities investigate disturbances between the mortal and the (possibly) divine. What starts off as an odd suicide case for Special Investigator Fatma el-Sha’arawi leads her through the city’s underbelly as she encounters rampaging ghouls, saucy assassins, clockwork angels, and plot that could unravel time itself, in P. Djèlí Clark's Tor.Com Original, A Dead Djinn in Cairo.
"Suehyla El-Attar’s narration has the vocal quality of slightly roughened silk, a gorgeously textured pleasure for the ear." (Locus)

Brilliant Ideas & Narration
I love so much about this - the alternative timeline Cairo in which a cavalcade of mythological beings were released led to the British colonials getting kicked out, the clockwork and sacrifice magic tech, the nod towards other gods and eldritch horrors being out there, the grounding of aforementioned supernatural beings in the setting, the catty criminal sidekick and sapphic love interest being set up, and the prose isn't face melting, but it's pretty good. Hell, even the English suited and bowler hat wearing femme detective is as close to being cool as someone can be while being a cop (ACAB).
The parts are great and this is probably as close to a 4/5 as it could be while I still can't personally give it that. Aspects of it are far beyond 3/5 for sure. I'm just not sure if the mystery, detective work, and actual narrative did it for me. I just wasn't hooked or gripped. My revulsion at cops definitely had an impact on my enjoyment, but I don't think that actually significantly effected my feelings about the narrative. However, it was absolutely worth far more than the 99p I paid for the audiobook of it on Audible.
I would still like to check out the first actual novel of this series. I just have far too many things at higher priority right now to warrant spending a credit or money on it any time soon, but it's definitely going on the TBR pile of many.
The narration by Suehyla El-Attar was superb.

great story telling
straight into the world, but no problems getting into what is happening. I enjoyed this dip into a world of Djinns and others having been brought into the world. the history was beautifully integrated into the story.

Steampunk Arabian Mystery
This was a throughly enjoyable read. I loved the setting of an alternate steampunky Cairo inhabited with Djinn and Angels. The story is well paced, anchored by the enthralling Fatma who is a wonderful protagonist. I hope P Djèlí Clark revisits this world.

Great short story!
Loved the story and the characters, was an easy quick listen. The accent tripped me up a bit because it seemed inconsistent but otherwise was a good performance. Def recommend:)

So so fun
A short and snappy vignette into a world with a fresh take on steampunk fantasy. A great entry point to P. Djeli Clark’s bibliography, I think.

Short but fascinating
I really enjoyed this piece, it was short but had all the making ms of a great story. I wished it had been a whole book and I’d learnt more of the laws of this world.

Fantastik! I’m looking forward to listen to the first book!
Great voice actor, great world building! A master of a Djinn is the book of the month in my Fantasy book club and I listened to this before I started it.

A good little insight to a new world
I have not yet read A Master of Djinn, but I certainly will, and this was a really great introduction into the world. I like the beings and immortals, and hope they feature much more heavily in future instalments.
