About this listen
Book one in the Bequin series.
Listen to it because:
It's an intriguing and evocative story that shows characters you know and love through new (yet strangely familiar) eyes, forging a stunning mystery that will leave you astonished.
The story:
In the city of Queen Mab, nothing is quite as it seems. Pariah, spy and Inquisitorial agent Alizebeth Bequin is all of these things and yet none of them. An enigma, even to herself, she is caught between Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor, former allies now enemies who are playing a shadow game against a mysterious and deadly foe. Coveted by the archenemy, pursued by the Inquisition, Bequin becomes embroiled in a dark plot of which she knows not her role or purpose. Helped by a disparate group of allies, she must unravel the secrets of her life and past if she is to survive a coming battle in which the line between friends and foes is fatally blurred.

Who can you trust?
To start with: Dan Abnett, the first author to bring the Imperium to life.
Then there is the narrator: Helen Keeley. Was not aware of her work before this, but she certainly made this story live for me. I wonder what it's like for a narrator starting out in the WH40k universe. Do they roll their eyes at the first bit of Sci-Fi but think of the fee? Do they think the writing has ideas above its station, or are they impressed with the effort? Do they notice at all? Maybe they simply like that they are not having to voice an animated toilet brush or are in a role that makes them the national face of cold sores.
The story is not all bolter-fire and cries of 'for the Emperorrrr!' In fact, there's barely any of that. There is combat and pursuit, but the thing is the intrigue. There are familiar characters, there are new ones. There are references to past exploits and histories not mentioned in previous work (that I'm aware of or can remember). There are hints as to the significance of things. If Eisenhorn and Ravenor are your thing, then this certainly will be.

Good book
am a big fan of Dan abnett and wh40k so no surprise I really enjoyed this book. Good plot line, kept me listening well past bed time more than once.
First time I have listened to a audio book so cannot give narrative a score, but sounded OK to me.

It got me hooked!
First of all i am not a huge fan of Warhammer. Like some 40k books but that is it. I tried some and hated them but this one soo captivating.
I love the pace, the characters, the mystery and the story. No clear cut good side and so many unknows but presented in a good manner, you do not feel overwhelmed.
Cannot wait to start the next book in the series!

Thoroughly enjoyed, especially the 2nd half of the book where things truly start to get crazy.

Excellent
Great characters, lots of intrigue. The story develops without patronising the reader. World building is also thorough but doesn’t feel it needs to explain everything. I’ve read a lot of warhammer novels and it’s always a pleasure to do done that doesn’t read like a teenage boy writing down what he did in a computer game battle for hours and hours.

Great book jarring voice acting
I don’t like focusing the review on the performance, but the narrator does my boy Harlon Nayl dirty, as well as a selection of other male characters. This wouldn’t be an issue if we hadn’t just had a masterclass by Toby Longworth painting them a certain way over the last six books. It’s very jarring, especially as I don’t feel she made an effort to continue much of a common thread with accents and styles of communication. It’s disappointing.
That being said, Dan Abnett has built something with this series that transcends the black library and I hope it gets some sort of screen adaptation at some point.
