Summary

This is my last love letter to you, though some would call it a confession....

A deliciously dark retelling of Dracula, A Dowry of Blood is a saga of obsession, desire and the lengths to which we'll go to protect the ones we love.

Saved from the brink of death by a mysterious stranger, Constanta is transformed from a medieval peasant into a bride fit for an undying king. But when Dracula draws a cunning aristocrat and a starving artist into his web of passion and deceit, Constanta realizes that her beloved is capable of terrible things.

Finding comfort in the arms of her rival consorts, she begins to unravel their husband's dark secrets. With the lives of everyone she loves on the line, Constanta will have to choose between her own freedom and her love for her husband. But bonds forged by blood can only be broken by death.

Includes a bonus short story, "An Encore of Roses", which is set after the events of A Dowry of Blood.

Good story, but feels like something is missing.

Story you can easily get in to, but it often felt like the author had forgotten to put some back story in or skipped a chapter, as it just kept rushing on to the next bit, without additional time for character development or deepening the story.
Still, an enjoyable and easy listen.

The illusion of love

I have never listened to a book as intensely as I listened to this one, although I have read it before. Bravo to the narrator, he did a very good job. A story about love, abuse and breakup.

Overhyped, but ok read

I have heard so many people raving about this book. It was fine, but nothing special in my eyes. Just not my genre perhaps. Good narration

Missing some bite!

I was shocked by the worlds biggest trigger warning at the beginning of this book. “Dear Lord… this must be terribly shocking!” Nope, not at all. The performance is beautifully read and captures the gothic atmosphere. The opening scenes are delicious. However, the violent pinnacle of this book basically amounts to a slap across the face. That made me want to slap my own face. It’s a vampire book - we are here for death, blood, horror, evil! The author seemed more concerned with skirting around the modern definitions of coercive controlling behaviour, than by letting Dracula be the monster we know (and want!) him to be. The story felt a bit anaemic towards the end as a result. Still definitely worth a read; I just hope the author pushes the story and the content much further next time. It could have easily filled another couple of hours.

The theme

I liked the narration and the premise of the story, but found the middle part of the book a little lacking in engagement.

Great gothic read

Really enjoyed listening to this book. I thought the story was well paced and interesting. The performer did a good job distinguishing between characters.

Wow

This is an achingly haunting queer reimagining of Dracula told from the POV of one of his brides Constanta. This novel spans centuries after Constanta was saved from death and tangled up in the manipulation and control of her creator. With time and the addition of others to their existence Constanta begins to truly see the evil her husband is capable of and uncovering his dark secrets and breaking free of his chains becomes imperative to all of their survival.

This is an incredibly personal take on this classic story and the authors use of language is heartbreaking & devastating. Constanta's experiences and the fact this book is written as an open letter to her husband after his death showcases that perfectly. It is emotional, powerful and raw for having been written the way it has. The writing itself was stunning, so beautifully done and the balance between the horror and romance in this was done well. This is also a stark representation of abusive relationships and how power dynamics, manipulation & gaslighting tactics aren't always easy to spot for yourself and how it can take seeing it happening to others close to you can open your eyes to your own situation and you having to gain the courage to leave. The narrator did an amazing job in her performance of each character and the melancholy & deep emotions of the story. An absolutely fantastic read!
