About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A shield maiden blessed by the gods battles to unite a nation under a power-hungry king - while also fighting her growing desire for his fiery son - in this Norse-inspired fantasy romance from the bestselling author of The Bridge Kingdom series.

Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband's back.

Freya's dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region's jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: she possesses a drop of a goddess's blood, which gives her magic capable of repelling any attack. A magic that was foretold would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath a king-the one who controls the shield maiden's fate.

Believing he's destined to rule Skaland, the fanatical jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders his son, Bjorn, to protect Freya from their enemies. Desperate to prove her strength, Freya must train to fight and learn to control her magic, all while facing perilous tests set by the gods. Except the greatest test of all may be resisting her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. If Freya succumbs to her lust for the charming and fierce warrior, she risks not only her own destiny but the fate of all the people she swore to protect.

great narration

I really enjoyed the story though I got a bit impatient as certain plot points were very obviously foreshadowed early on, but then drawn out until the end of the book. Hands down what made this was the narrator. She was amazing.
it really brought everything to life allowed you to get wrapped up in the story and mythology.

Great narration

This is a very enjoyable, easy to follow romantic fantasy story - it’s imaginative and different in terms of its setting. The plot may be a bit predictable in places, but very little to dislike about it. I liked the main character, the lead male character was also good and they had great banter and jokes between them. I like this author, and if you have read and enjoyed her other books you will like this one for sure.
Special mention to the narrator, because this has to be one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to; she has a lovely voice, authentic sounding considering the setting, and well acted for all the different characters. I am glad I used a credit on this one because I know I will happily re-listen to it in future.

It was alright. Narration saved it

I wasn’t as captivated as I wish I could have been. The narrator was great but the middle part of the story I just wasn’t invested in.

What a story

Fast paced and beautifully told. Freya is the perfect FMC ! I love Norse mythology but this was a more human story.

lovely story

I absolutely loved how names and places were pronounced, something I would not be able to do myself.

Entertaining throughout

Norse mythology, forbidden love, slow burn, angst, tension, action, easy and not too heavy world building, an interesting magic system, characters that have depth, a plot that moves at a good pace and keeps you interested and intrigued throughout... this book has all of that. I had a fantastic time reading this, it hooked me from the first chapter, one of the first lines of internal monologue from the FMC Freya immediately endeared me to her character and made me chuckle and it kept my attention from that point.

I don't want to say too much regarding the actual story as I think going into this blind would give you the best experience of it. So on that note what I will say is I enjoyed the banter & tension between Freya & Bjorn our MMC, I really enjoyed Bjorns character and demeanor throughout. Freya is a complex character and there were aspects of her I loved but also others I found grating, on occasion she acted like an entitled and petulant child and I'm not about that so for that reason the book didn't quite make a full five star rating for me. The story itself was fast paced, entertaining and I can't wait to see where book 2 will take us after that ending.

I'm glad I decided to do this as an audiobook as I know that even with the author & narrator putting together a pronunciation guide for the authors website... I would have unintentionally butchered the fu*ck out of the names, places, beings & things etc in this one and I love that the author chose a Norwegian speaking narrator to ensure the authenticity of the language, her performance was excellent. 🌶🌶

I liked the narrator. She did a great job

It was a good story. Not excellent but good. I could tell where this is going from afar and to be honest, the male lead betraying the heroine’s trust has now became a cliche. Everyone does it and there is nothing refreshing. It’s the same old story as any other popular book but with vikings. The Viking’s were a nice touch though but the plot could have been better. I will still read book 2 because of the author
