On 21 June 1922, Count Alexander Rostov - recipient of the Order of Saint Andrew, member of the Jockey Club, Master of the Hunt - is escorted out of the Kremlin, across Red Square and through the elegant revolving doors of the Hotel Metropol.

Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the Count has been sentenced to house arrest indefinitely. But instead of his usual suite, he must now live in an attic room while Russia undergoes decades of tumultuous upheaval.

Can a life without luxury be the richest of all?

Wonderful book, shame about careless pronunciation

Completely agree with all the other reviews. Splendid book - spoiled for me by the absolutely infuriating, liberally peppered mispronunciations of certain names and words. Once might be fine. Two or three times might be forgivable - and maybe I'm just being overly pedantic - but not even being able to pronounce fairly standard words like 'Ermine' or 'Cossack' correctly...

Surely the reader could have done a little research to round off what is otherwise a beautifully read book. End of rant!

Whimsical story with some incongruous narration

On the whole, I found this a really pleasant, easy listen. If you like small details and lengthy descriptions, you'll love it. However, I really struggled with the incongruity of some of the pronunciation - a British narrator using American intonation was very jarring at times and the narrator's pronunciation of the Count's regular bouts of French was truly awful.

Beguiling, uplifting, inspiring and beautiful

Count Rostov is quite the most charming man I have ever met - in literature or life! I have a feeling I will be in the Metropol for a while yet, unwilling to listen to anything else.
Spellbinding and intelligent, this novel weaves its way towards its climax looping and harking back to events we have witnessed in the Count's life.
The relationships he manages to grow and hold onto within the walls of the Metropol with his boundless loyalty and generosity of spirit are exquisitely drawn.
Time after time I was touched by a beautifully expressed truism on the nature of love, fate or human frailty.
Be patient in the first few chapters, this is worth all your attention and you will soon find yourself drawn in and captivated by the world Mr Towles has created. Just wonderful.

A true masterpiece

This is perhaps the best of the many audiobooks I have downloaded. The setting and location are beautifully written. The characters are vivid and rounded and the story moves along at just the right pace. There are so many ups and downs during this story that you feel so emotionally attached to not only the Count, but all the main players. Stunning work.

A Gentleman in Moscow

Almost the best book I’ve listened to in recent years. The characters are so well defined and the story absolutely believable and delightful. The ONLY downside is the reader’s mispronunciation of so many words, eg penchant & attaché. Otherwise faultless

Fascinating read, well written.

A long book that didn't feel long. Interesting all the way through and packed full of stories and characters.

A beautiful read

I felt transported to Moscow by the writers vivid descriptions. It was humorous in parts without making light of serious themes. Beautifully written and well worth every page.

Beautiful language

Beautifully written with lovely, descriptive language. I struggled to finish the book which is a shame as it it so well written and read. I didn't find the storyline very captivating.
