About this listen

In her opinion, there's a big difference between lying and not telling the whole truth....

...but when Harry Saunders chose to use her nickname on a resume, she knew anyone reading it would assume she was a man. But that was fine by her - as long as it meant getting the job. She needed the benefits for her sick little boy, and no matter how much one of her bosses hated her for not being entirely honest, she wasn't going to back down and quit.

Women had their place - and it wasn't working construction....

The moment Chris Parker realized they'd been duped, he tried in vain to find a loophole so he could fire Harriet. But just because they're stuck with her doesn't mean he has to like it, and he will never give up hope that she'll give him a reason to get rid of her. Until the day he discovers that she has a very ill son. A son who develops an instant case of hero worship for Chris.

Clean, heartwarming romance

This book has all the feelgood romance one could hope for. Heavily loaded with growing sexual tension, but without the distraction of sex, the story feels realistic. The characters are interesting with backstories that contribute to the development of the plot and imperfections that make them believable. Harry is a single mother with a very challenging situation at home. It would take a very special kind of person to take want to be a part of her life. Instead of providing a perfect man for her, Chris is very human, starting off borderline unlikable. Without giving anymore of the story away, I found this audio book very satisfying.

A cute story

I quite liked how this book dealt with considerably sensitive issues: child with leukaemia, and then gender biases ( one of the characters was frustratingly sexist towards a woman being in a construction company. The book however was intriguing in the way the relationship developed, and the way the events played out was also quite fascinating.

The only downfall was when there was a lot of dialogue between child and the adult characters. As cute as it was, it didn't fit the narrator's voice. I also felt annoyance with how Harry let her boss (Chris) walk all over her, choosing what her son should eat (fast food) and, making calls on the little things e.g. having them ride in his truck, creating an extra burden for Harry (she lost a bet, which meant she had to clean his truck). Again, quite sexist.

Then there was how he kept thinking Harry to be a poor mother (at one point he worried if Scottie, the little boy, was eating well- as though, his mother wasn't capable.) I understood the boy had leukaemia, but come on- since when is constantly enticing an ill child to oily, fatty, unhealthy food a good idea?

I don't know, but this book didn't sit well with me.

Though, I certainly liked the cute message: children come first.
