Summary
SIXTY YEARS LATER, HILL HOUSE IS OCCUPIED AGAIN . . .
Discover the landmark first novel ever to return to Hill House, officially authorised by the Shirley Jackson estate.
Whatever walks there, no longer walks alone . . .
Playwright Holly Sherwin is close to her big break. Having received a grant to develop her new play, all she needs is time and space to bring her vision to life. Then on a weekend away, she stumbles upon Hill House - an ornate if crumbling gothic mansion, near-hidden outside a small town.
Soon Holly's troupe of actors - each with ghosts of their own - arrive at Hill House for a creative retreat. But before long they find themselves at odds not just with one another, but with the house itself.
For something has been waiting patiently in Hill House all these years.
Something no longer content to walk alone.

Superb!!!
A truly excellent, spellbinding sequel to Shirley Jackson’s iconic original story. Hill House still watches and waits.

“Hill House watches, Hill House waits.”
A beautifully built story with lots nods to the original Shirley Jackson novel. With the house as the constant, the largest of the characters, processing each of the remaining characters through their own, very personal, undoings. The house magnificently attracts them and repels them at the same time.
The narration is sublime; it’s such a pleasure to listen to. Elizabeth Hand and Carol Monda are such a wonderful pairing.

Amazing narrator
Absolutely loved this. Excellent story, and excellent storytelling.
At times this gave genuine thrill of fear... I listened to the entire book over three days. Had I not been forced to do 'life' stuff... It would have been less.

Doesn’t quite deliver but some good scary moments!
I loved the original & thought this was an intriguing idea. The characters weren’t likeable or well-drawn enough for me to really care about them. There are some really lovely scary moments & images but what’s actually going on in the house is a bit disjointed & doesnt really all hang together well - like there’s a lot of different things going on when the action gets going but it all feels a bit messy. The performance was good.

Scary story but slightly lacking
Overall I enjoyed this scary story, but felt some of the characters lacked depth and I didn’t particularly care about them. But it didn’t ruin the atmosphere that built up slowly towards a really quite terrifying ending.

A haunting return to hill house
Coming from a huge Shirley Jackson-/Hill House-fan; this hommage does the original justice. Eerie, haunting, gothic, perfect.
The narration is superb and audioeffects and excellent voice work really bring the story to life.

Good narrator makes the most of a poor book
If I say the most original thing about this book is having the house upside down on the cover you may get the general idea. If you enjoyed, or perhaps even revere, Shirley Jackson's flawed masterpiece The Haunting of Hill House, and in particular if you haven't read it yet, avoid this book. Carol Monda, on the other hand, is excellent.

Interesting if imperfect
I’m a Haunting obsessive, so I understand the desire to imaginatively return to Hill House again and again. The author clearly loves Jackson too, and gives us a few scary moments indebted to her oeuvre. However, I did feel that there was too much going on, too quickly. A slower pace with more build-up would have worked better for me. The characters aren’t likeable, but I don’t have an issue with that, as it puts the reader in an interesting position of being on the side of Hill House. My biggest gripe was with the sound design. We don’t need sound effects on an audiobook! Trust the author and the performer to do their work.

Absolutely terrible
The characters were all awful, at first I though 'OK we are meant to hate them' but nope the author must be from a stage school. if you like spontaneous singing, acting and general stage school needy attention seeking behaviour this is the book for you. Cringey throughout, the only character likable was in the back screen. how this made it to edit, I'll never know.
