Summary

A century before A Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros....

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin's ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire.

Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there were Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals - in stature if not experience.

Tagging along with him is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg - whose true identity must be hidden from all he and Dunk encounter: for in reality he is Aegon Targaryen, and one day he will be king. Improbable heroes though they be, great destinies lie ahead for Dunk and Egg, as do powerful foes, royal intrigue and outrageous exploits.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms brings together for the first time the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin's ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire, set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory.

Critic reviews

Praise for A Song of Ice and Fire: "In the grand epic fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best...tense, surging, insomnia-inflicting." ( Time Magazine)
"An absorbing, exciting read...Martin's style is so vivid that you will be hooked within a few pages." ( The Times)
"The sheer mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." ( Guardian)
"Colossal, staggering.... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world.... The writing is always powerful...." ( SFX)

Awesome

Only 4 star because there's only one mummer better than Harry Lloyd and that man is Ser Roy Dotrice!

Interesting book shame about the sound

Narrator was engaging but the variation in volume of voice was too much some parts would be really loud for long periods and then very quiet

A wonderful prelude to a song of ice and fire.

a wonderfully detailed prelude to a song of ice and fire. however, I found that Duncan too often threatened to clout egg in the ear in additional to the narrator for lady webber sounds like the same person who voiced prince valar.

Not up to GoT's level, but still solid

Takes place a long time before Game of Thrones begins, just after the Blackfyre/Targaeryan rebellion.

Its basically 3 shorter stories in one. Started slow, but really picked up, and I was hooked by the middle of the first

Interested in GOT history? This is for you ;)

The way Harry Llyod reads this is thoroughly engaging; his accents are quite funny, he brings the intensity when it's needed and you can feel the enthusiasm from his voice. The story is great as usual. Egg's lineage is particularly interesting because you are introduced to Targaryens you've heard of for the first time. It just makes me want to read more books about them. The interactions between outcasts Dunk and Egg are also rather endearing. At times, it feels like there is a few too many characters to keep up with but this is compensated by Martin's characterisation. He put care into these characters and it shows.
