About this listen

Inspector Singh is in a bad mood. He's been sent from his home in Singapore to Kuala Lumpur to solve a murder that has him stumped. Chelsea Liew - the famous Singaporean model - is on death row for the murder of her ex-husband. She swears she didn't do it, he thinks she didn't do it, but no matter how hard he tries to get to the bottom of things, he still arrives back at the same place - that Chelsea's husband was shot at point blank range, and that Chelsea had the best motivation to pull the trigger: he was taking her kids away from her. Now Inspector Singh must pull out all the stops to crack a crime that could potentially free a beautiful and innocent woman and reunite a mother with her children.

There's just one problem - the Malaysian police refuse to play ball….

Impressive Murder Mystery!

Step aside, Hercule Poirot! Make way for Inspector Singh -an overweight curry loving maverick who pursues his murder suspects like a bloodhound using his knowledge of human nature to find the culprit. I enjoyed the candour that the author showed describing the lifestyles of the ultra-wealthy. Behind closed doors, one realises that everyone experiences their share of joy as well as desperation and we all crave for a little love and sincerity.
I found the dichotomy between the postcolonial Malaysian legal system and Sharia Law followed by the large Muslim population particularly fascinating and practical. This is directly at odds with the version peddled by fundamentalists in the West. It was also interesting to see that people are aware of the dire consequences of mistreating the environment in humanity's endless pursuit of greed.

Quality plot

The cover and title make this book look like a cozy murder mystery, but the plot is more sophisticated and compelling, dealing with environmental destruction and the cultural difficulties in Malaysia. Looking forward to more.

Good concept...

and could be a very good TV series. But, not really sure of the novel somehow. I really liked the lead character 'Inspector Singh' but not really sure of the strength of the supporting cast.
Worth a listen as Jonathan Keeble is an AWESOME narrator. His narration of The Woodcutter.... superb.

At last a Singaporean hero!

Great book. I really loved Inspector Singh and his Malaysian colleagues. The death penalty adds an extra queasy urgency to the investigation. I was slightly uncomfortable with a white European narrator, as excellent as Jonathan Keeble is, and his Chinese accent made me cringe a bit.

Great characters, plot and insight

Great thought provoking and amusing “who dunnit” including facts about environment and law which are made extremely relevant and impact characters directly… excellent
