About this listen

With Christmas approaching, the Brogan family of London's East End are braving the horrors of the Blitz. With the men away fighting for King and Country and the ever-present dangers of the German Luftwaffe's nightly reign of death and destruction, the family must do all they can to keep a stiff upper lip. For Jo, the youngest of the Brogan sisters, the perils of war also offer a new-found freedom. Jo falls in love with Tommy, a man known for his dangerous reputation as much as his charm. But as the falling bombs devastate their neighbourhood and rationing begins to bite, will the Brogans manage to pull together a traditional family Christmas? And will Jo find the love and security she seeks in a time of such grave peril?©2018 Jean Fullerton (P)2018 Bolinda Publishing Coming of Age Family Life Fiction Genre Fiction Historical Historical Fiction Romance War & Military Christmas Celebration War Winter

wonderful Story, awful narrator

I absolutely love these stories, but the narrator of this 2nd book completely ruined it.

Amazing story

I didn’t realise this was a continuation of a previous book about the Brogan family but I was pleasantly surprised.
The story about other members of the brogan family left me shocked, tearful and enthralled. I was totally gripped by all the twists and turns and was emotional at others.
Loved loved loved

Awful amateurish voices on a great story

Sadly I had to keep abandoning this as there was only so much of this narrators dialogue I could take. Instead of varying the way someone talks, using speed, tone, pace, another more subtle realistic ways of portraying a cockney accent, we were subjected to shrieking, shrill, parody accents.
Such a shame. I do hope they stop using the school or give her some lessons in how to pronounce words better. Also awful emphasis within a sentence, changing the meaning, from time to time. But Jean Fullerton is always excellent. I highly recommend call nurse Millie series.

Enjoyable listen

Normally I don't opt for stories based around the war era but choose this book after searching for Christmas titles. The storyline was great and although there were a few predictable chapters, the book is definitely worth a read/listen and has a good narrator. I will definitely look into more books from this author.

Poor narration

Book 1 was really great. Narration bringing the characters to life, but book 2, I struggled through. The narration didn’t give the characters dimension , I found it hard to listen to. I’ve only persevered as I’ve seen the next books are narrated by Annie aldington, who brilliant at bringing characters to life. I hopefully will enjoy the creative the series.

Ear plugs needed!!

A good story spoilt by a terrible narrator. So much shouting paracetamol were needed. Never listened to a story before that left my head pounding. I should have taken note of other reviews as a warning was there. Very disappointed.

The narrator ruined it

Unfortunately I found listening to this book was an ordeal, due to the narrator.

I persevered because I wanted to listen to the series in order, but I was glad to finish it.

The narrator was reading the book as if she was in an amateur school play. She overacted, used a mix of bad accents and even worse voices, and had a habit of screeching and yelling dialogue which was painful to listen to.

In addition, because of her schoolgirl-type narration, the bad language in the book gained an emphasis which I didn’t notice in the last book. It sounded gratuitous rather than convincing.

Possibly because of the grating narration, I did not enjoy the storyline as much in this book. The writing appeared to be mundane and not inspired.

I am relieved to learn that the next book in the series is read by the great Annie Aldington, who can bring any book to life.
