Narrator was awful
The narrator really distracted from the story. Her voices for all of the characters were very cartoonish. Her voice while narrating Ollie's first person POV was a cross between sultry and surfer dude, but when Ollie spoke it was a totally different voice, making her sound like a strident, petulant, bratty 16 year old. The two very different voices for the same character really took me out of the story. Plus, none of the other characters' voices sounded like real people. Very childish and buffoonish. Can only recommend the print version of this book, not the audio version.

Narration
I love the story, but this narrator is awful. I already returned Donna's audible books "The Wilds" which were narrated by this same lady. Too bad I didn't realize it was the same narrator when I bought this series. Way to ruin a good story.

A Step into the Dark
Ollie Wit, Book 1
By: Donna Augustine
Narrated by: Angel Clark
I saw this author's book on freeaudiblecodes and nabbed it, I love her books but I didn't check the narrator. I should have! I encountered her narration on freeaudiblecodes before. Ugh!
The book itself has a good premise and it was interesting but it was difficult to concentrate on the story with the whiny, cartoon like voices. As the narrator was describing the action or narrating the scene her voice was fine but when it came to dialogue it was headache inducing!
The plot to the story was a little weak and seemed to just stop and I hate cliffhangers. I did like the gargoyles!
I want to try book two but I will read it with an ebook! I have read other books from this author and this may be a fluke or just my not being able to concentrate.

Feels like time wasted.
Unfortunately I don't feel able to give too much of a critique regarding the plot, as there wasn't really much of one to speak of. Both the hero and the heroine had so little depth to them. They were so shallow that I really couldn't comprehend how they could have a relationship with each other, when they barely existed themselves. It would seem that the author didn't really intend for them to develop a relationship beyond a little bit of witty banter and occasional flirtatious glances. That's perfectly fine, if that's the sort of relationship you're looking for, but that's not the way it was sold. The side characters seem to have more going for them than the main characters, but that's not saying much. In general the book seemed to float around not exactly knowing where it was heading. The last paragraph seems to imply the potential for a love triangle, but I really hope I'm wrong there, as there was already no love to speak of. It would be incredibly contrived! It's apparent that this was simply seen as a setup device for future books, but the danger in doing that is when you forget to make this book a story in and of itself. The author has fallen into this trap. The narrator's performance didn't do anything to make up for the weak story, in fact probably did more harm than good. The male voices especially either came across like whiny teenagers, or ornery grandmas. It was genuinely laughable! Unfortunately, I'm not sure that's what the narrator was really going for. The heroine was largely naíve, and once people did give her a bit of information so that she would not be the least knowledgeable person in the room, she took none of it at face value and still decided to do anything and everything to dig herself into deeper holes. It's as if Ollie herself didn't want me to enjoy this story. Utter self sabotage.
I received this audiobook free, in exchange for an honest review.

Questions need to be answered.
The synopsis for this story drew me in. It fit into my paranormal realm that I love.
When I first started this story I did not know what to expect. The narrator made it very hard for me to get into it. She made Ollie sound very annoying and whiney. I did not know if that was how she was supposed to portray her but that is how she ended up. Even the other characters sounded annoying.
As I got pass the narration I appreciated the little nuances she brought to the characters. If Ollie was supposed to yawn she did and made me know that she was truly tired without stating so.
When I got into it I loved the characters and the story. Ollie has been through so much and all she wanted was answers. Ollie did not get all of the answers she was looking for. However, she gained a mismatched family.
The entire story explored the world she is involved in. I wished that we got to see more of the world. There was so much going on that I felt a bit cheated that it was just glossed over. For instance, we know that Kane is an Anchor but what does that really mean? Also I would love to know who Butch and Kane were referencing.
I am committed to this series and I really hope that it does not disappoint.

A Step in the Dark is ok but I felt like the story had gaping holes. Olivia's abilities were never completely explained and she was kept in the dark throughout the book. This kept her from making more intelligent decisions which made the story difficult sometimes.
