About this listen

"There's a scarlet thread of murder running through the colorless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it."

From the moment Dr. John Watson takes lodgings in Baker Street with the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, he becomes intimately acquainted with the bloody violence and frightening ingenuity of the criminal mind.

In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes and Watson's first mystery, the pair are summoned to a south London house where they find a dead man whose face is a twisted mask of horror. The body is unmarked by violence, but on the wall a mysterious word has been written in blood.

The police are baffled by the crime and its circumstances. But when Sherlock Holmes applies his brilliantly logical mind to the problem, he uncovers a tragic tale of love and deadly revenge.

abysmal narration

why on earth would you get an American narrator to put on a terrible fake British accent to narrate this? the story seemed compelling enough but unfortunately I could not bring myself to finish it due to the appalling narration. totally ruined the experience. The narrator's RP middle class British accent was terrible enough, but when she tired the working class cockney accent is when I threw in the towel. really really bad narration. avoid.

Brilliant story. Dreadful narrator.

Who on earth chose this terrible narrator to read one of the best detective stories ever?

Hmm…

The narrator has a pleasant voice, pronunciation and rhythm, but especially the first part is recorded poorly when it comes to the quality of the sound. The characterization of Sherlock is slightly exaggerated; the real problem is that “his voice” becomes later the voice of other characters, turning out to be quite confusing.
As for the novel per se, I must say that I expected something better. The constant celebration of Sherlock is honestly very annoying. Also, I’m not an expert when it comes to Mormons, but it doesn’t take one to see that, regardless liking them or not, the representation of their beliefs is widely inexact even for a work of fiction. Still, the story per se is interesting and well written.

Great story line BUT completely spoilt for me .

Good Conan Doyle spoil by the narration by a female voice of a totally male orientated story line, soilt futher by it being American. Just did not fit and made it difficult to follow
