Welcome to Jeremy's farm. It's an idyllic spot, offering picturesque views across the Cotswolds, bustling hedgerows, woodlands and natural springs. Jeremy always liked the idea being a farmer. But, while he was barrelling around the world having more fun with cars than was entirely reasonable, it seemed obvious that the actual, you know, farming was much better left to someone else. Then one day he decided he would do the farming himself. After all, how hard could it be?

Wonderful in every way! Doesn't disappoint!
- By Mark on 17-07-22
Summary
Like many Brits, Dick and Angel had long dreamed of living in France, but where others might settle for a modest bolthole in the French countryside, the Strawbridges fell in love with a 19th-century fairy-tale chateau, complete with 45 rooms, seven outbuildings, 12 acres of land and its own moat.
Throwing caution to the wind, Dick and Angel swapped their two-bedroom flat in East London for an abandoned and derelict castle in the heart of the Loire valley and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime with their two young children, Arthur and Dorothy.
Sharing their full journey for the first time, A Year at the Chateau follows Dick and Angel from when they first moved to France in the depths of winter and found bedrooms infested with flies, turrets inhabited by bats, the wind rattling through cracked windows and just one working toilet, which flushed into the moat, through to the monumental efforts that went into readying the chateau for their unforgettable wedding and their incredibly special first Christmas.
Along the way you'll listen to glorious descriptions of rural life in France, with charming characters, delicious food and wonderful seasonal produce, together with the extraordinary list of renovations and restorations Dick and Angel completed, many of which were not shown on TV.
As warm and entertaining as their much-loved show, A Year at the Chateau is a truly irresistible story of adventure and heart, epic ambitions and a huge amount of hard graft.

You’ll love it if you love them and the TV show!
I came to ‘The Chateau’ late in the day; over lockdown in January 2021 and it has been my ‘happy place’ ever since! The Strawbridge family are an inspiration on how not to let stresses and strain get the better of you or each other. I decided to buy the book as I wanted further insight into their ‘origins’ story and it didn’t disappoint! Yes there is lots from the show, but I didn’t mind reliving that and there is still a few behind the scenes bits too. I also loved that they read it. They appear to be just themselves throughout the tv show and it’s the same on the audio book, warts and all which I love. Thank you for sharing and best of luck Mr and Mrs Strawbridge for your continuing adventures, I hope we get to share some more of them over the years.

One of worst narrations ever.
Why did the Strawbridges use their own voices to narrate their story? Obviously it makes it relatable but Angela’s high pitched, amateur delivery is really hard to take. Her accent doesn’t help but the most irritating thing is that she is obviously reading it from a their script. Good stories need competent narrators and she just isn’t. Dick is better but his up and down delivery where he is trying to inject light and shade into his voice makes it jerky. They take turns reading a bit then there is a pause and Dick picks up from Angela which is a slight relief. Shame as the story is interesting. They should stick to their strengths. Telling anyone a bedtime story is definitely not one of them.

Beautiful
After watching Escape to the Chateau I decided to try the audio book.
I met Dick many years ago and know firsthand what an amazingly funny, genuine chap he is. Not only is he an amazing cook he’s has an encyclopaedic brain and is an amazing font of knowledge.
The story begins with the search for the chateau and month by month as the seasons change you are taken on journey with Dick and Angel as they get to grips with living in France.
Beautifully written and narrated by Dick and Angel this really is a modern day fairytale. You can’t help but be swept up in the romance of it all.
Lots of lovely recipes are included which had my tummy rumbling at the thought of such gastronomic delights.
