About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Welcome to the White House.

At the heart of Washington, there is a circus. It's raucous, noisy and full of clowns. Reporting on it is a daily cacophony. Four major stories can blow up and blow out before breakfast, and political weather systems are moving at warp speed. The one thing absent from the weather forecast is the tranquil eye of the storm. That we never see.

In A Year at the Circus: Inside Trump's White House, BBC North America Editor, Jon Sopel, takes you inside Trump’s West Wing and explores the impact this presidency has had on the most iconic of American institutions. Each chapter starts inside a famous Washington room, uncovering its history and its new resonance in the Trump era.

You are invited to step inside the Oval Office where Trump called for loyalty from FBI Director James Comey, and experience life as a reporter in the Briefing Room, where the tense relationship between the media and the President is played out. Guiding you through these rooms, Jon reveals the inner workings of the Trump White House and details the key moments and conversations that have unfolded within its walls.

From Kim Jong-un and Kavanaugh to Merkel and the Mueller Inquiry - this is your insider guide to the Washington Circus. Roll up, roll up ...

Better than Fire and Fury

An accurate, unemotional account of the chaos in the Trump White House and what it's like to follow the Twitter President.

Please read this book..an important eye-opener.

A very clear insight into the world of the 45th Presidency of USA.. At all times, clear reportage of events and those in the White House charged with responding to those events makes for extraordinary reading. Well done Jon Sopel for lifting the lid on what must indeed feel like a Circus, with a very controlling and inconsistent Ring Master. I hope all Americans will search their souls before re-electing the current incumbent.

Enjoyable and mesmerising

Really enjoyed this. Herculean effort to remain impartial. Great narration, at times dips into monotone.

This is an extended news bulletin

Listened until the end and yes it’s an insight into the mad world of the 45th !
But the narration almost made me return this title. A little like listening to an extended news report and somewhat monotonous. Would put me off buying another from this author.
Sorry John !

Not a BBC news story

Thoroughly enjoyed the content. Sadly, Jon Sopel's familiar reporting manner was inherent throughout the narrative, so it was often like listening to hour-long news bulletins, becoming tedious.

sounds very personal

very interesting especially on the first lady and air force one and the role of the vice President but it's mostly a rant against Trump from start to finish. it sounds like a work of vengeance for being publicly humiliated by the President during a press briefing. in the end would this book has been written in Obama,s time? no, because it was a boring presidency. you can't call Trump boring. And who else would take on China in this era when that dictatorship needs to be dealt with toughly. not with kids gloves

Awesome informative and incredulous!

This book embodies the difference between American and British politics. Only the Americans could install a figurehead such as DT. The books gives a great insite to the disorganisation impetuousness and Chaos of this administration. Whilst being a great American history lesson it could also doubles as a plot in an episode of Suits, The West Wing or Designated Survivor. Brilliant from start to finish. GB
