Summary
A Zoo in My Luggage is the colorful, first-hand account of Gerald Durrell's six-month animal-collecting trip in British Cameroon, and his attempts to create his own zoo. Motivated by a passion for wildlife, and a desire to save endangered species from extinction, Durrell assembles a glorious panoply of exotic animals - including a female baboon called Georgina, who later runs amok in a department store; a black-eared squirrel, who tries to bury nuts in his ear; and a gentlemanly chimpanzee named Chumly, who greets him with an outstretched hand. Aided by the Fon of Bafut, who houses the collection (and hosts many long and lively parties), Durrell amasses more than 250 animals. He struggles to find a home for the animals back in England, until a stroke of luck leads him to Jersey, and the eventual founding of Durrell Wildlife Park (now Jersey Zoo).

Fascinating and entertaining as usual
A fascinating account of visiting Bafut in Africa and collecting the first batch of animals to start his zoo. Always enjoyable to hear his stories. The narration is excellent.

A simple masterpiece
There are some swear words and some times when we opened it it would skip back about 25seconds bit frustrating but over all a good book👍

Not so much dated as historical
Although animal collectors are now an outdated phenomenon, this is, historically, an interesting and warm tale, very well read. I read it as a teenager and felt a warmth for the Cameroon and the people there, particularly the Fon. Rupert does such wonderful pIdgen English that I find myself talking it to myself during the day. Not everybody’s cup of tea - but i loved it!

Racist overtones and misogynistic
This book started wonderfully until they started doing racists stereotypical accents and making jokes about the “ weaker sex”. I would have loved to read/hear the story without the unnecessary accents.
