Summary

A memoir from national treasure Brian Blessed.

There is no one quite like Brian Blessed. He's an actor, film star, trained undertaker, unlikely diplomat, secret romantic, martial artist and mountaineer. He's also a brilliant storyteller who will - and you must brace yourself - simply leap out of the story at you.

Ready? Then listen to Absolute Pandemonium, and you'll be taken on a riotous journey from his childhood, growing up the son of a miner in Goldthorpe, to finding fame in Z-Cars. You'll see Brian falling for Katharine Hepburn on the set of The Trojan Women, suffering wires strapped round his wotsits as he was hoisted into the heavens on Flash Gordon, almost causing an international incident when meeting the Emperor and Empress of Japan, and winning round George Lucas to get the role of Boss Nass on Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Along the way he takes secret revenge on headmistress Mrs. Jarman and her very big bottom; punches Harold Pinter; loves and hates Peter O'Toole; woos his beautiful wife, Hildegard Neil; and braves the shocking death toll on cosy TV drama My Family and Other Animals.

Crammed with anecdotes from his illustrious career, this is a funny, warmhearted, life-affirming, LOUD, and unique memoir from a much-loved figure.

Larger than life

I thoroughly enjoyed Brian Blessed’s romp through his life. As with everything he understands the rules and then promptly changes them (for the better). He therefore allows the listener to travel effortlessly through his timeline as he explains why he became who he is by grouping events rather than relating his story chronologically. Not only does this make for a better tale but also allows for a greater understanding of the metamorphosis of the child into the substantial man that Brian is.

You may have gathered from this review that I am unashamedly a fan of Brian’s; although this was not always the case. Until a few years ago I had perceived Mr Blessed as being a loud, brash man. How wrong I was. The only failing of this book is that Brian is too modest to explain the truly heroic acts that I suspect he has omitted from this otherwise entertaining and informative autobiography.

Gordon's ok

It's like sitting with Brian Blessed and having him shout stories at you. In a log cabin.

Not so much an autobiography as a force of nature

Would you consider the audio edition of Absolute Pandemonium: The Autobiography to be better than the print version?

Astonishingly well performed- funny powerful- moving and at times remarkably wise. Hugely entertaining and I really rather missed him when it had finished!

Who was your favorite character and why?

The stories of peter O Toole were great fun…the section with Katherine Hepburn was …intriguing - whose was the voice ?

Have you listened to any of Brian Blessed’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Not hear anything else by him but would so so like a shot!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely !
