William Gibson
About this listen
Audible is bringing William Gibson’s uncovered Alien III script to life in audio for the first time, to mark the 40th Anniversary of the birth of the Alien franchise.
Alongside a full cast, Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen reprise their iconic roles as Corporal Hicks and Bishop from the 1986 film Aliens.
Father of cyberpunk William Gibson’s original script for Alien III, written in 1987 as a sequel to Aliens, never made it to our screens, although it went on to achieve cult status among fans as the third instalment that might have been after being leaked online.
This terrifying, cinematic multicast dramatisation - directed by the multi-award-winning Dirk Maggs - is the chance to experience William Gibson’s untold story and its terrifying, claustrophobic and dark encounters between humans and aliens, as a completely immersive audio experience.
The story begins with the Sulaco on its return journey from LV-426. On board the military ship are the cryogenically frozen skeleton crew of that film’s survivors: Ripley, Hicks, Newt and Bishop.
We travel aboard and hear an alarm blare. Our heroes are no longer alone....
Starring: Tom Alexander, Barbara Barnes, Michael Biehn, Cliff Chapman, Samantha Coughlan, Ben Cura, Dar Dash, Harry Ditson, Mairead Doherty, Lance Henriksen, Graham Hoadly, Lorelei King, Laurel Lefkow, Martin McDougall, Sarah Pitard, Michael Roberts, David Seddon, Andrew James Spooner, Siri Steinmo, Dai Tabuchi, Keith Wickham, Rebecca Yeo.

Average through and through.
Just average. Despite a pretty good dramatisation, and a good performance from Biehn as Hicks it didn't quite emit the sense of urgency it was trying to portray. Henriksen as Bishop was too dry and detached, even though as a synthetic you'd expect him to be. Characters were individualised well - I liked the Southern drawl from one character, the hippy ecologist and the rough surly engineer - good character identity and easy to identify each one when listening
There was also quite a bit of deviation from the original script, but not in a detrimental way.
Finally, the first 10-15 minutes of the dramatisation were completely pointless, being a recap of the film Aliens. Anybody who has even a passing interest in this particular audiobook will know the Alien franchise well, and the Aliens film intimately.
So, it was Ok, but not great. I'll probably listen to it again, but not in the immediate future.

The one I'd wish was the real 3rd Alien movie!
Short, but very well made. Excellent acting, and a great story. I could imagine Hicks and Bishop were both there straight out of Aliens.

David Fincher Need not Worry
A lot of people don’t like Alien 3, because they are stupid. They either lament the terror of the original, or the ye-har of the sequel, which, is my favourite film, by the way. But they are missing a trick.
The Director’s Cut, or Special Edition of Alien 3 is fantastic, as the narrative hasn’t been chopped up for theatrical release. The Alien coming from Spike the dog... come off it.
Initially, I was disappointed with this new version, but I re-wound and started again after an hour, or so and took more interest in what I was hearing.
It’s actually really quite good, with many a nod to the previous films.
But at 2.5 hours, it’s not long finished!

The adventure we should have had!
William Gibson’s unproduced script, directed for Audible by Dirk Maggs and starring Lance Henricksen and Michael Biehn, is the sequel we should have had. It’s pacey, scary and tense from start to finish. Another great addition to the Audible Originals series of ALIEN audio dramas. Very highly recommended!

Unsubtle space action but still fun.
The allegory is somewhat ham fisted and the storyline is unsubtle but this is a very different beast to the cinematic release version. If you like Aliens this works if you prefer Alien it still needs work.

Way better than the film
This short story is nothing like the letdown third film. It has original cast members and just an awesome plot.
