Summary

'There isn't going to be an easy way to say this....'

An evil monster exposed?

'...I'm afraid an allegation has been made.'

Or an innocent father condemned?

A scandal will shake a small community to its very foundations.

Sandbeach, South Wales. Two women have come forward to make historical sexual allegations against a pillar of the local community, Matthew Cooper. And child-safeguarding protocol demands that Social Services remove the accused from his home and his family while a formal assessment is carried out.

The Cooper case lands on the desk of inexperienced social worker Kit Goddard. Although intrepid and intuitive, she is ill-prepared for such a high-profile case.

Kit finds herself navigating a local minefield of connections and class, reputations and rumour. Unsure whether her interference is a heroic intervention or a hurtful intrusion, she knows one thing: it will have an impact. The question is whether this impact will be to expose an iniquitous lie or destroy an innocent life....

Critic reviews

Thought provoking and page turning at the same time. Kit Goddard is a fantastically drawn character and I look forward to reading more in the series. (Jenny Blackhurst)

Great book

Kit is a strong character, the plot kept me interested and the narrator does an excellent job. Lovely Welsh accents. Would recommend.

Engaging despite grim subject matter

Well drawn characters and a solid story all be it not exactly happy-place stuff. I found it well written - only fault was it felt a little rushed as it closed -I would have liked more about some of the characters. Will purchase from this author again no doubt about it and narration was excellent.

Pleasant enough but no real intrigue

I found the storyline weak and wasn’t really sure where it was going. A awful lot of details about unnecessary things. The narrator did a good job with a twee story.

Easy Listen

This was a good book thought it would be more informative about child protection laws and that's why I bought it .It was more of a story but not much background on how legal stuff plays out but overall it was interesting.

Great story Great Characters

Really punchy from the beginning. it would be good to have a series following Kit and her journey as she becomes more confident in SW. She's a great character and I think she could be taken much further! Well worth a read.. and GREAT narration.

Enjoyable and engrossing

I'm not usually a fan of books relating to social workers but I decided to give this one a go and am glad I did. It's very engrossing and the narration is first rate.

Decent “made for TV rights” fare

That about says it all. The sort of light drama that would be good to watch on a Wednesday night over three parts. Decent enough plot, but nothing that’ll set your world shaking. Rather annoying “here is how it works” conversations where the author tries to coach readers in procedure via work based conversations that stick out as ludicrous, as working professionals would have those learnings in their rear view mirror. Outcome entirely predictable. But not bad! Narration decent.

A gripping read!

Allegation is a fascinating and enthralling story of a new young social worker wrestling with her own upbringing in the care system. The story centres around one case but the worker's own family history has a sordid tale unravelling in parallel. An excellent story well told by the writer with incredible accuracy and understanding of Social Services and the system that rolls into place when an allegation is made. My only sadness was that it was over too soon having not wanted to stop until I got to end. There needs to be more stories about these characters, especially Kit the main protagonist, and I eagerly await a sequel. Thoroughly recommended!

I loved it

This was a really good, realistic , pacey story. I would be interested to read the next book from the same author. Being from South Wales but living abroad, I loved listening to the narrator perform as it reminded me of home. It is worth a listen.
