Summary
When a killer’s podcast reveals more than the truth....
Esme is a start-up success who runs her own successful media company and heads up a series of investigative podcasts. She also has a beautiful home, where she lives with her sister, Michelle, and her son, Zachary. Sure, there’s an ex-husband hanging around - Owen likes to pop round a bit too often - but everything is civilised and amicable. She has life all tied up.
But Esme knows that any successful podcaster is only as good as her last story, so she sets out on a new series of interviews to get to the truth behind Simone Fischer’s high-profile murder of her husband. Self-defence, crime of passion or coldly pre-meditated?
She emerges after one jail visit to discover that her sister has been viciously attacked and is in a coma. And so begins the unravelling of Esme’s life. Where she thought there was trust and loyalty, she slowly discovers deceit and betrayal. No one is quite who they seem - not even her closest family.
As the podcast interviews plunge deeper into revealing the unnerving psychology of a murderer, Esme must try to keep her own sanity intact. The truth - about Simone and Esme’s own family - is there, if Esme can only find it. But will her investigations reveal more than she ever wanted to know?
This taut psychological thriller is perfect for fans of Serial and Kathleen Barber’s Truth Be Told.

K. L.Slater’s best so far, let down by some of the narration
This is K L Slater’s best novel yet. The format adds a new interest to their novels which can be a little formulaic. Slater intoduces a host of truly unlikeable characters as usual- overbearing mother in laws, manipulative exes. And the frustrating situations that make you want to give the protagonist a shake!
The story is gripping and interesting and original- a podcaster interviews a female murder convict in an effort to quash her conviction, whilst dealing with some serious and shocking issues in her private life.
The main narrator who is playing the part of Esme is excellent- much preferable to the usual narrator for her books. However the narrator for Justine was absolutely woeful. Perhaps at least listen to what a Nottingham accent sounds like before attempting to replicate it?! It was like a cross between North Yorkshire and Manchester. Justine’s own voice was like a child being asked to pretend to talk like the queen. Another disappointing aspect was the levels between Esme’s and Justine’s parts were different- kept having to turn the volume up and down.
Thankfully Justine’s parts were few and far between and I thoroughly enjoyed this book overall.

Entertaining
I usually like different narrators for each character. This book however has more than one narrator for same character which I found distracting and annoying.

Twisty as a bag of snakes
Great storyline. The plot had so many twists and turns I think I had almost all of the characters pegged as bad guys at one point of another!
The narration was a bit confusing, using different performers for different sections of the book and therefore the main characters spoke with a different voice. But the plot was strong enough to win through. The
Kept me guessing to the end and I liked the way the loose ends were nearly dealt with! This is not the first KL Slater book I have read and it won't be the last

Another enjoyable and topical KL Slater
Really enjoyed this and would have given 5 stars for performance were it not for the person who read the Justine chapters which were quite bizarre. She redid the main character of Esme in an entirely different dialect and made her sound like a completely different person. She also failed to read authentically. I’d have been happy to just stick to the main narrator who was excellent. The change was jarring and unnecessary. I did guess most (not all) of the plot twists but it didn’t really matter. Still kept me wanting more. Satisfying psychological thriller.

Good - interesting but not great
Overall it was an interesting story but the narrator of Esme was a bit whiny so I just had no empathy for her

Gripping Story
I was amazed that this book was a freebie but I could not stop listening. The plot was interesting and the narration natural. I have never listened to a book by this author before, but now K L Slater is on my list of writers to follow. Thank you Audible and I recommend other Audible members to listen to this book.
