About this listen

I would like to make myself the heroine of this story and my character to be noble - an innocent victim led astray. But alas, sir, I would be lying....

Tully Truegood: orphan. Magician's apprentice. Whore.

In prison, accused of murder, Tully begins to write her life story. A story that takes her from a young daughter-skivvy in the back streets of 18th-century London to her stepmother Queenie's fairy house - a place where decadent excess is a must....

Trained by Queenie to become a courtesan and by Mr Crease, a magician who sees that Tully holds similar special powers to his own, together they make Tully the talk of the town.

But as Tully goes on a journey of sexual awakening, she falls in love with one of her clients, and the pleasure soon turns to pain. Especially when the estranged husband she was forced to marry by her father suddenly seeks her out. Now Tully is awaiting her trial for murder, for which she expects to hang...and her only chance of survival is to get her story to the one person who might be able to help her.

Thoroughly enjoyable listen

There was not one part of this story that I forsaw turning out as it did. A twisting, turning, unfolding of events which led me through some poetically written prose intricately detailing the life of an exraordinary woman.

Captivating read.

I'm so glad I stumbled across this author other books. I love both an Almond for a parrot and The beauty of the Wolf. Both beautiful written and narrated. Recommended!

It was ok, nothing special. Very sex centric.

Mindlesly listened to it while doing chores and it was great for that. The narrator performance was great and I don't think I would have finished the book otherwise.

Starts off interesting but then halfway it just becomes predictable and boring. Almost as if the author took a long break from writing and then forgot half of the side characters, small plotlines and that the main character could use magic. Every character fell flat.

Some parts felt slightly homophobic despite the author including gay couples.
Sex is a very centric theme throughout the entire book. It's intentionally portrayed in a very naive way from the main character's point of view (she is a naive, simple minded, horny young lady), but later on when introducing darker sides of sex work, her reaction to it felt weirdly indifferent and it bothered me abit. Sex scenes were quite unrealistic and silly overall and they're all over the place and if that bothers you, this book is definitely not for you.

You have to love a story with a twist.

All the way through this magical yet sometimes disturbing story you are filled with hope for a happy ending. The life of the main character is at times enchanting and sometimes distressing. As a visual reader, the narrator renders images in the mind of each character and scene.
I used to read Sally Gardiner stories to my daughter so it is perhaps understandable that I enjoyed this book written under her pseudonym.

Absolutely loved it

The best book I’ve heard in ages. I loved the story, it’s content & the way it was read. At times it made be burst out laughing, but has a tender side to it too.
I’ve recommended it to all my friends.

Vivid and intriguing

I wasn't sure about this story, but I kept going..... and I'm so glad that I did. Tully surprised me, the ghosts surprised me, the sexual tension and vivid stories unfolded beautifully, examining the plight of so many women in times gone past, who had to rely on using their bodies to survive. I so loved this book, and beautifully narrated too.
