Summary
1703. The wild east coast of Scotland.
Returning to her home town of Pittenweem, fishwife and widow Sorcha McIntyre knows she faces both censure and mistrust. After all, this is a country where myth and legend are woven into the fabric of the everyday, a time when those who defy custom like Sorcha are called to account.
It is dangerous to be a clever woman who 'doesn't know her place' in Pittenweem – a town rife with superstition. So, when a young local falls victim to witchcraft, the Reverend Cowper and the townsfolk know who to blame. What follows for Sorcha and her friends is a terrifying battle, not only for their souls, but for their lives, as they are pitted against the villagers' fear, a malevolent man and the might of the church.

Most Beautiful, emotional journey into the past!
I could not stop listening to this book. I have a passion for history and especially Scottish witch history and Karen Brooks has by far written one of the best books I’ve ever come across! Without giving anything away be prepared to go on an emotional rollercoaster and be sure to have a box of tissues to hand as she weaves you back and forth through a snippet in time of some of the most strongest women you’ll ever come across. I was sad to finish the story but it has now set me on a path to research more Into the women you so beautifully brought back to life, thank you.

The brutal reality of womens’ lives.
I liked the story, and the language used reminded me of words and phrases that my Scottish mother and her relatives used.
The narration was good
There was some parts that were so brutal but well described.
The love story and intruded at times and it was a bit long.

Best of Karen Brooks
I loved this one! And I am a big fan of Willow Nash' narration. She lends just enough drama to the story without going overboard.
And these are Karen Brooks' best characters. The main fishwife is her most believable heroine. Flawed but not too self-flagellating. Funny and strong without being self-righteous.
The main character is actually the location. The sea. The times in which this is set. If you are a fan of novels about witch hunts, this is one for you. Well researched.

Gripping historical fiction, perfect if you love witches
I loved this book. I was gripping the edge of my seat at times, screaming over the unthinkable deeds of the villains, and crying along with the fish wives as they faced both misery and joy. I’m actually sad it’s over and I’ll miss sawsha, Nettie and the others. Please write more books! I love everything you’ve got on audible.

Stunning
Yes, it is a bit long and yes it could have been abridged but it is a captivating story based on a history most horrid! I thoroughly enjoyed the characterisation of all of the protagonists and the self obsessed and cruel minister was equally horrible and eerily fascinating.
Recommend!

Spellbinding
I absolutely loved this. I couldn't stop listening. The love between the women, the brutality of men, the twisting of faith - all so well written.
There are 2 occasions where it sounds like a second narrator has made ammendments which threw me off a little but it's only for a sentence or two.
overall, a great emotional listen
