Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

She could be the girl dancing on tables one night, and the next she'd be hiding in the shadows.

Just when I thought I understood her, she would melt away and become a completely new person, and I'd have to start all over again.

That's how it was with Anna.

Nick and Anna work the same summer job at their local cinema. Anna is mysterious, beautiful and from a very different world to Nick.

She's grown up preparing for the end of days, in a tightly controlled existence where Christmas, getting drunk and sex before marriage are all off-limits.

So when Nick comes into her life, Anna falls passionately in love. Their shared world burns with poetry and music, cigarettes and conversation - hints of the people they hope to become.

But Anna, on the cusp of adulthood, is afraid to give up everything she's ever believed in and everyone she's ever loved. She walks away and Nick doesn't stop her.

Years later, a tragedy draws Anna back into Nick's life.

But rekindling their relationship leaves Anna and Nick facing a terrible choice between a love that's endured decades and the promises they've made to others along the way.

unsettled

I finished this in two days- initially I didn't care for the story & just wanted to finish it. But as time went on and the story developed I found myself wanting the best for Nick. It's a sad story. I feel very vulnerable having listened to it. I would recommend it but I'm not sure that I love it.

A wonderful tale of love.

This was a slow burn for me but worth persevering with. Nick is not always admirable but I loved his honest story telling. I totally engaged with the characters and found the story very thought provoking.

A bit of a dull slog.

I downloaded this because it was recommended on the UK TV show Between the Covers, a book review series. But I was pretty disappointed. The overall story is just dull with characters I couldn't get attached to, especially the main character Nick. A spineless berk of a man. The jumping forwards and backwards in time was a fairly clever device to demostrate to the reader/listener why Nick is the way he is because of his overbearing father etc but it was over used. I don't think the narration of Oliver Chris helped either with his emotionless, monotone.

Thought provoking but difficult to follow for me

Despite my fascination with time travel stories, time hopping within a narrative never appeals to me. But I persisted to the end. Some interesting themes within, about love, family, religion, death and life.

A beautifully written book - definitely not just a love story

I loved this book, a story where you aren’t disappointed by the outcome but you feel the pain of and reality of life and how it rarely goes the way you expect.

Can’t wait to read Jodie’s next book!

Excellent story well read

I saw this book being reviewed on tv and decided to choose it using my monthly credit. It was so absorbing with multiple stories and threads that I read it in 3 days!
Narration is excellent and perfect for the characters
This is a debut novel and so well written I can’t wait for next one.

highly recommend

I really enjoyed this- getting more and more gripped as the story went on. I found the narrators pronunciation of the word 'rifling' infuriating though!
