Summary

The discovery of a dead banker sends shock waves through the sleepy coastal town of Ayr. And it's up to DI Bob Valentine, recently back on the force after his near-fatal stabbing, to find the killer.

But leads are hard to find and the pressure is on from an anxious Chief Superintendent who is being hounded by the media and still has serious concerns about her DI's mental health.

And as it becomes clear that there's a serial killer on the loose, Bob Valentine must battle the demons of his post-traumatic stress, an investigation team that's leaking like a sieve and frightening visions that might just be the key to unlocking the mystery.

Sad and thought provoking

Set in a part of a Scotland I know very little about this cruel ale gradually drew me. Initially I found the book slow but the lead character was more likeable than he was sometimes not as he struggled with too many clues and bodies. I would like to hear about him again. Garth Cruickshank's narration was the clincher in making this a very good story to be told.

multi fascited detective story with depth of emotion & supernatural hints

Wow, what a listen! A lover of Stuart McBride, James Oswald, Tony Parsons & the like this is my first listen of Tony Black and I absolutely loved his multi layered detective Bob Valentine & am left needing to greedily consume further books in this series. Just the right amount of supernatural/sixth sense reflections with hard slog & gritty detective work....wish I could write like this! PERFECTLY performed Audio reading. I'm hooked!

An exercise in misery

DI Valentine is a self obsessed angst ridden pain in the neck totally unlikable and the author writes in metaphors thousands of them some of which are far fetched and ridiculous so much so it delays the story and plot. The summary of this book is misleading don't fall for it if you want your books to be entertaining and a satisfying read. Not recommended.

It started reasonably well.

Any additional comments?

I have never reviewed s book before but this one is so bad I had to say something.
