Summary

At last, the definitive audiobook about perhaps the best cabin crew dramedy ever filmed: View from the Top starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

In Ayoade on Top, Richard Ayoade, perhaps one of the most 'insubstantial' people of our age, takes us on a journey from Peckham to Paris by way of Nevada and other places we don't care about. It's a journey deep within, in a way that's respectful and non-invasive; a journey for which we will all pay a heavy price, even if you've waited for the smaller paperback edition.

Ayoade argues for the canonisation of this brutal masterpiece, a film that celebrates capitalism in all its victimless glory; one we might imagine Donald Trump himself half-watching on his private jet's gold-plated flat screen while his other puffy eye scans the cabin for fresh, young prey.

and so I watched View from the top

Richard reading this made it for me. Very funny in places and the digressions into his own life stories are fab. His observations on GP's career along the way are also hilarious, if cutting. Hadn't seen the film, but he makes you want to, and yep, it's really bad.

A kind of extended critical review of a film.

Suspect this book will be entertaining and informative if you are in the movie business or studying media, but alas was not my cup of tea.

Really like Richards humour on TV but I don’t feel it translated well to audible as just sounded like a lot of rambling. May have been the subject matter as is kind of his description from a director/ movie buff perspective on a movie which isn’t particularly a classic or well known. I haven’t seen the film but suspect the humour is that this must be a naff film and he is taking it apart piece by piece.

If your a movie buff, critic, media student then this book will probably be for you. Otherwise I wouldn’t recommend.

Wonderful

Wonderful insight into the best piece of cinema of the 21st century, but why did he miss the best scene? (asses the window)

The most entertaining film dissection

This is not only the most entertaining, but also the most important film dissection in recent history.

It quite figuratively 'flies in the face' of all those who think that"View from the top" does not need a discussion almost 4 times the length of the film itself.

Well done Ayoade!

If you like Richard Ayoade, you'll like this!

Loved it! Richard Ayoade in fine form. Great listen and laughed a lot. Will listen to it again I think. Glad I opted for the audio version over kindle as I was going to hear Ayoade's voice anyways. It's an unusual book so even better to have him narrate it as made it much more entertaining. Ayoade could read the back of a cereal box and it be interesting!

Excellent

Very funny. Laughed out loud like an idiot several times. Having liked but not loved his previous books in print, I'll be downloading the audio versions for sure now and expect to enjoy them a lot more.

The top is tops

First I hit play - “what is this?” I thought 1/4 of the way through. Half way I realized it was a deep analysis of a film. I stopped listening temporarily feeling ill equipped, then rented and watched said film. Not only did I laugh hysterically through the first half of the film, I laughed even harder at the last half of the audiobook after having seen the film!
It is a masterpiece.
But who made that incredible music?!? I googled to no avail.

Weirdly wonderful

I bought this not really knowing what it was, but I like Richard Ayoade, so I got it. I feel like if I had known it was a whole book reviewing one really bad film I'd have been more reluctant to get it. But it turned out to great! really funny and the narration by Richard Ayoade made it even better.

Hilarious!

I must have been about an hour into the audiobook before I realised that the film Ayoade was talking about was actually real. If you've read / listened to Ayoade On Ayoade, you'll understand why. I hadn't read the synopsis before starting it, so it was only because he was still talking about the same film after an hour that I thought to actually look it up. Now that I've finished his critique, I think I may have to watch the film too, god help me!

Just brilliant

The film review that we all didnt realise we needed. Richard throws in many juxtapositions and puns.
