Summary

The 12th explosive novel in the internationally bestselling Skulduggery Pleasant series, Bedlam will blow your mind - and change everything....

On a desperate journey to recover her sister's lost soul, Valkyrie Cain goes up against the High Sanctuary itself, and there's nothing Skulduggery Pleasant can do to stop her.

With Abyssinia's grand plan about to kick off in a night of magic, terror and bloodshed, it falls to Omen Darkly to save the lives of thousands of innocent people. And as the madness unfolds around him, as hidden enemies step into the light, and as Valkyrie is sucked into a desperate, lawless quest of her own, he has no choice but to become the hero he never really wanted to be - or die in the attempt.

Derek Landy hates us all.

Skulduggery pleasant meant something when I started reading it, it meant badass heroes fighting ingenious villains with a combination of casual violence and kick ass lines. In this book those characters are flat, skulduggery pleasant contributes almost literally nothing to the story and even less to the entertainment value of this book. There is exactly one scene that is worthy of a skulduggery pleasant book and it doesn’t involve skulduggery pleasant in self. In this book the skeleton detective is not present, he has been replaced with a humourless psychiatrist with no social skills. This is the third book in the series where Valkyrie Kane is sorting through her own problems. I sincerely hope that the next book will come with an announcement that books 10 11 and 12 in the series have been removed from Canon and we can just start again. I also don’t really care about the side characters, skulduggery pleasant is about awesome heroes so why do we keep watching Omen fluffing around like an idiot, the president fluffing around like an idiot, Sebastian fluffing around like an idiot. The killer supreme/zombie King was one thing but having three Wimpy idiots randomly influencing plot is just annoying.
The reader is not the worst reader to ever read a skulduggery pleasant book, he is the second worst. Any accent that isn’t Irish inevitably ends up as Irish anyway, The title character is flat and has no inflection or life in his voice, conversations between characters where the author has omitted to say who is speaking get confusing because both characters sound exactly the same. I spend most of my time reading this book grieving for what skulduggery pleasant used to be.
The story had a little to recommend it barring the fact that the conclusion suggests that maybe future books will be returning to the old style, witticisms and cool fights instead of introspection and self loathing. Quite frankly the themes covered in this book are exactlyThe things that I want to get away from when I read the fantasy book. And he tried to bring in real world emotional context and just made the most fun and entertaining series of all time into the most depressing book I ever read.
Derek Landy, please bring back the original skulduggery pleasant and please employ a reader capable of reading these books! Obviously I would like Rupert Degas back but Stephen Hogan would be a massive improvement on the people who have read the last three books. Are used to love this series and I will keep buying the books, but I now buy them in fear that they might be as Bad as the last not in the excitement that they may be as good as the last.

Brilliant story - Terrible narrator

Eesh. The story itself was excellent. Loved it. However, the narrator's accents were just horrendous. The British accent sounded like someone from Downton Abbey rather than the beloved Tanith we know and love, and the Scottish accent sounded like a really, really old person. Just....bad. I would be prepared to purchase this again if it was narrated by one of the previous people.

great book ruined by terrible accents

The narrator just can't do accents. I'm all for different voices for characters but both Tanith's English and Melitsa's Scottish accent were what you'd hear in a carry on film and you'd not guess Razia was Australian unless you knew.

Love Skulduggary, struggled with book 12

I have read/listened to the first 11 books three times now. However, I struggled with book 12. The story was all over the place, characters all washed into each other. I forced myself through it and got to book 13. Read this book and get to book 13, its worth it.

Splendid storytelling... awful narration.

This has got to be one of the most brilliant books in the series yet. However, I feel that the narrator absolutely ruined this masterpiece. Nero fitted much better as American, and now he sounds even whinier. Militsa Gnosis and Tanith Low are both fantastic characters. The accents Kevin Hely has given them... are not. It gets to the point where the accents distract your focus from the actual writing, a true tragedy as Tanith is one of my favourite characters in the entire series. I love the writing, but please, and I cannot stress this enough, find someone who is able to do the accents in the series properly. I would encourage everyone who listens to this audiobook to read the physical copy if you haven’t already - Kevin Hely does not do it justice.

Hooked again!

I absolutely loves the original series, and re reading (or listening) to the originals i fell back in love. The first 2 books of the reboot I found to be good and still with classic Landy styling but it wasn't untill this book i was fully hooked back in. and it was right off the bat, that note before the stsrt and the way the first chapter unfolds. I knew it meant business, and this book delivered. And the ending, oh my god the ending. Didn't see that coming, neither will you ;)

What’s happened to you mr author

Why did you kill off the zombie king and ur best characters, Valkyrie was a bad ass which made the books a bit positive, now she is a wimp always moaning, after book 9 this series was over but it happens to them all, Dresden files, sandman slim, Alex versus they all lose what made them appealing it must be a mind thing from the authors
