About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

When Gregory Matthews, patriarch of the Poplars, is found dead one morning, imperious Aunt Harriet blames it on the roast duck he ate for supper. After all, she had warned him about his blood pressure. But a post-mortem determines that the cause of death is much more sinister. Murder. By poison.

Suspicion falls immediately amongst his bitter, quarrelsome family. Each has a motive; each, opportunity. It falls to Superintendent Hannasyde to sift through all the secrets and lies and discover just who killed Gregory Matthews, before the killer strikes again....

Utterly delicious

I am a lifelong fan of Georgette Heyer and all of her writing. This story and the narration are up there with the best. Her ability to craft a narrative with both wit and sleight of hand is a joy to behold. I am surprised that her mystery stories are not more highly rated. I consider them at least equal, if not better than many of the more popular written during the Golden Age. I am enjoying this performance so much I have several times rewound, on the excuse that I needed to recap a little, but in reality because I want it to last for longer. I will certainly look out for more by this narrator.

Fantastic

Georgette Heyer at her best. Wonderfully observed characters. Very much of the period. Clever idea. Matt Addis is superb yet again.

excellent narration

I have loved Georgette Heyer's detective stories for a long time but the previous audible versions had a shockingly bad narrator so I'd stuck to the paper version. I was thrilled to see they had been re-recorded. Matt Addis did a good job on the first in the series but has really hit his stride with this one. The highlight for me was batty Mrs Matthews and he really got the light humour of the books across. Oddly his female voices are better than his male voices. I've finished this and immediately downloaded the next in the series.

It was all good

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Matt Addis is just a joy to listen to. The story is clever and keeps you on your toes trying to guess who the culprit is. Could listen to stories like this time and time again. A must listen to. Lewis

Brilliantly constructed and read...

...as other Matt Addis readings. I've no memory of reading murder mysteries by GH as a teenager, so it's wonderful to find them now

Good twist at the end!

Slow start, but worth sticking with. Very well read. You can picture the different characters quite clearly in your head. Good old fashioned murder mystery, well written.

A favourite brought to life

I have enjoyed this murder/mystery by Heyer for years, especially for the characters and the wit of Randall Matthews. It was a pleasure to hear them brought to life so expertly by Matt Addis. He is fast becoming one of my favourite narrators and I search out for titles he has read on Audible.
Highly recommended as an example of traditional mysteries from the early 1900s.

Love Georgette Heyer but this was uncharacteristically dull

I’ve read most novels by Georgette Heyer & think she is a wonderful writer. Sadly I just couldn’t get into this. The characters are uninspiring the storyline is dull, the dialogue drags & the whole thing just has no oomph. The narrator is annoying. I’m afraid I’m abandoning it for something more interesting.

Beware

This is an abridged version of the book. More than disappointed. It should be labelled as abridged.
